Ray-Ban maker EssilorLuxottica says it sold over 7 million Meta AI glasses in 2025, more than tripling sales from the 2 million sold in 2023 and 2024 combined, as Meta continues expanding its smart eyewear ambitions.

EssilorLuxottica, the eyewear giant behind Ray-Ban, announced Wednesday that it sold over 7 million Meta AI glasses in 2025, marking a significant acceleration in sales of the smart eyewear collaboration with Meta. This figure represents more than triple the 2 million units sold across 2023 and 2024 combined, according to the company's fourth-quarter earnings report.

Sales Surge Reflects Growing Consumer Adoption

The dramatic sales increase suggests growing consumer acceptance of AI-powered smart glasses as a mainstream wearable technology. Meta first partnered with EssilorLuxottica in 2021 to create Ray-Ban Stories, which offered basic camera and audio features. The current generation of Meta AI glasses, launched in 2023, incorporates more advanced capabilities including voice assistants, real-time translation, and multimodal AI features.

Industry analysts had previously estimated that Meta and EssilorLuxottica sold approximately 700,000 units in 2023 and 1.3 million in 2024, making the 2025 figure particularly impressive. The sales growth comes as Meta continues to iterate on the product line, with recent updates adding features like live AI assistance and improved camera capabilities.

Meta's Broader Smart Glasses Strategy

The strong sales performance aligns with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg's vision of smart glasses eventually replacing smartphones as the primary computing device. During Meta's recent earnings call, executives highlighted the glasses as a key growth area alongside their virtual reality and metaverse initiatives.

Meta has been steadily expanding the AI capabilities of the glasses, including partnerships with Spotify, Audible, and other content providers. The company recently introduced real-time language translation features and continues to enhance the onboard AI assistant's ability to process visual information through the glasses' cameras.

Competition in the Smart Eyewear Market

While Meta's sales figures are impressive, they still lag behind traditional eyewear sales. EssilorLuxottica sold over 200 million pairs of glasses globally in 2025, making the 7 million Meta AI glasses a small but rapidly growing segment. Competitors like Google, with its recent relaunch of Android-based smart glasses, and startups like Brilliant Labs are also vying for market share in this emerging category.

Future Outlook

EssilorLuxottica's strong sales figures suggest that consumer interest in AI-powered smart glasses is accelerating faster than many industry observers predicted. With continued improvements in battery life, form factor, and AI capabilities, the category could see even stronger growth in 2026 and beyond.

The success of Meta AI glasses represents a rare bright spot in Meta's hardware division, which has faced challenges with its metaverse and VR initiatives. As the technology improves and prices potentially decrease, smart glasses could become a significant revenue stream for both Meta and EssilorLuxottica in the coming years.
