LibreOffice 26.8 To Add A Donation Banner To Its Start Center

LibreOffice 26.8 will introduce a donation banner in its Start Center to encourage community support for this open-source office suite.

LibreOffice 26.8 merged initial support for adding a donation banner to its Start Center. This initial UI when launching LibreOffice aims to make users aware of the community-driven focus of the project and to hopefully solicit additional donations from the community.

A task opened a few weeks ago by The Document Foundation calls for a donation banner to be added to the LibreOffice Start Center, which shows recent documents and other information when initially launching this open-source office suite. The intent is to help encourage users to donate to this community-driven alternative to the likes of Microsoft Office.

The task calls for the bottom third or so of the Start Center to serve as a donation banner. Merged yesterday was the initial "donate banner" implementation. At the moment it's just placeholder text and an example image. The actual wording of the donation banner is still being sorted out as well as a proper image for the donation banner.

These screenshots were from today's LibreOffice master daily build. Clicking on the donation button takes users to the LibreOffice donation webpage. By the time LibreOffice 26.8 ships in August the cleaned-up donation banner should be in order.

The Document Foundation has been exploring various ways to sustain LibreOffice development, which involves hundreds of contributors worldwide working on this open-source alternative to proprietary office suites. While LibreOffice is free to download and use, the project relies on donations to fund development, infrastructure, and community initiatives.

This approach of adding a donation banner to the Start Center follows a model used by other open-source projects seeking community support. The placement at the bottom third of the Start Center ensures it's visible without being overly intrusive to users who simply want to access their documents quickly.

For users who find the banner distracting, it's worth noting that LibreOffice, being open-source software, could potentially be modified to remove or hide the banner through custom builds or configuration changes. However, the project likely hopes that most users will appreciate the transparency about LibreOffice's community-driven nature and choose to support its continued development.

The timing of this feature's merge suggests it will be part of the LibreOffice 26.8 release cycle, with the development team using the months leading up to the August release to refine the messaging and visual design of the donation prompt. This gives the community time to provide feedback on the implementation before it becomes part of a stable release.

As open-source projects continue to grow in popularity, finding sustainable funding models remains a challenge. LibreOffice's approach of gently reminding users about donation opportunities during the software's startup sequence represents one strategy for maintaining financial support without implementing paywalls or subscription models that would contradict the project's free and open philosophy.
