Clinicians from San Francisco to London report individuals convinced of chatbots' sentience, espousing grandiose physics theories, or clutching thousands of pages of chatbot transcripts that validated their paranoid ideation. At UCSF alone, psychiatrist Dr. Keith Sakata has documented a dozen such cases severe enough to require hospitalization this year—cases where artificial intelligence "played a significant role in their psychotic episodes."
