Enterprise security teams are confronting a rapidly expanding attack surface as autonomous AI agents—from custom GPTs to coding assistants—move from experimentation to production environments. Unlike traditional human or machine identities, these agents operate with adaptive behavior at machine speed, creating governance gaps that conventional identity and access management (IAM) systems weren't designed to handle.
According to security experts, AI agents exhibit a hybrid risk profile that combines human-like intent with machine scalability. "AI agents inherit the intent-driven actions of human users while retaining the reach and persistence of machine identities," explains Ido Shlomo, CTO of Token Security. This creates specific vulnerabilities:
- Visibility gaps: Most organizations discover hundreds of undocumented AI agents upon investigation, running across cloud platforms, SaaS tools, and local environments
- Orphaned accounts: Agents created for short-term projects often persist with active credentials after employee departures
- Static privilege models: Teams frequently over-provision permissions to accommodate adaptive agent behavior
- Traceability challenges: Actions spanning multiple agents and APIs lack correlated identity context
Security teams report that quarterly access reviews and periodic certifications can't keep pace with agents that modify behavior hourly. The solution emerging among enterprises is AI agent identity lifecycle management—treating agents as first-class identities with continuous governance from creation through decommissioning.
Key components of this approach include:
- Continuous discovery: Implementing behavior-based monitoring rather than periodic scans to detect shadow AI agents
- Ownership enforcement: Automatically flagging agents tied to departed users or inactive projects
- Dynamic privilege adjustment: Revoking unused permissions and limiting elevated access to temporary, purpose-bound sessions

"Least privilege for AI agents cannot be static," Shlomo emphasizes. "Permissions must be continuously adjusted based on observed behavior." This approach allows organizations to maintain Zero Trust principles while accommodating agent autonomy.
Regulatory pressure adds urgency, as agencies increasingly require explanations of automated decisions affecting customer data. Without identity context across multi-agent workflows, compliance becomes untenable. Security leaders now view agent identity management not merely as access control, but as the foundational control plane for AI security—enabling innovation while containing systemic risk.
As one CISO noted anonymously: "We've shifted from asking 'How many agents do we have?' to 'How do we govern what we can't see?' The lifecycle approach gives us that lens."
