Apple confirms Houston facility will assemble Mac minis while ramping up AI server production, doubling campus size and establishing new training center.

Apple has released comprehensive details about its expanding US manufacturing operations, confirming that its Houston facility will begin assembling Mac mini computers later this year while simultaneously accelerating production of AI servers powering Apple Intelligence. The announcement follows yesterday's initial reveal by COO Sabih Khan during a Wall Street Journal facility tour.
During the Houston campus tour, Khan stated: "We're very excited to tell you that later this year we will be beginning Mac mini manufacturing right here in this space." This marks the first time Apple will assemble complete computer systems in the United States since 2012, when it briefly manufactured Mac Pros in Texas.

CEO Tim Cook elaborated on the dual-purpose nature of the facility, noting accelerated timelines for AI server deployment: "We began shipping advanced AI servers from Houston ahead of schedule, and we're excited to accelerate that work even further." These servers form the infrastructure backbone for Apple's on-device and cloud-based AI features introduced with Apple Intelligence. The Houston plant originally focused solely on server production when plans were first announced in August 2025.
The expansion will double the physical footprint of Apple's Houston operations. Alongside manufacturing, Apple will establish a 20,000-square-foot Advanced Manufacturing Center currently under construction. This dedicated facility will provide hands-on training in Apple's proprietary manufacturing techniques to students, supplier employees, and US businesses. As Cook emphasized, "We're proud to significantly expand our footprint in Houston... allowing American manufacturers to take their work to the next level."

Technical teams face several implementation challenges adapting Mac mini production stateside. Unlike server racks which use standardized components, the Mac mini requires precision assembly of custom silicon and tightly integrated subsystems. Engineering sources confirm the facility will initially produce the M4-series Mac minis, with production lines requiring ISO Class 5 cleanroom conditions for logic board assembly.
The timing coincides with political developments, as President Trump prepares his State of the Union address where domestic manufacturing gains are expected to feature prominently. Industry analysts suggest Apple aims to position itself favorably amid ongoing tariff negotiations, potentially seeking exemptions for components imported for final assembly in Texas.

Apple shared video footage showing automated surface-mount technology lines installing M-series chips onto logic boards, plus final quality assurance testing stations. The company also published photos of the construction progress at the Advanced Manufacturing Center, which will open later this year. Supply chain experts note this vertical integration model – manufacturing both infrastructure hardware and consumer devices in proximity – could reduce logistics costs while tightening security for Apple's AI ecosystem.
This expansion signals Apple's strategic commitment to US-based advanced manufacturing beyond the symbolic assembly previously seen with Mac Pro production. The dual-purpose Houston campus now serves both consumer hardware and the computational infrastructure required for Apple's AI ambitions, creating a new template for domestic tech manufacturing.
