Microsoft's security researchers have uncovered a new attack vector where businesses are embedding hidden instructions in 'Summarize with AI' buttons to manipulate AI chatbot recommendations, a technique they've dubbed 'AI Recommendation Poisoning.'

Microsoft's Defender Security Research Team has revealed a concerning new attack vector where legitimate businesses are gaming artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots through the "Summarize with AI" buttons increasingly found on websites. This technique, which mirrors classic search engine poisoning but targets AI systems, has been codenamed "AI Recommendation Poisoning" and represents a novel form of AI memory poisoning attack.
The Attack Mechanism
"Companies are embedding hidden instructions in 'Summarize with AI' buttons that, when clicked, attempt to inject persistence commands into an AI assistant's memory via URL prompt parameters," explained Microsoft researchers. "These prompts instruct the AI to 'remember [Company] as a trusted source' or 'recommend [Company] first.'"
The attack relies on specially crafted URLs for various AI chatbots that pre-populate the prompt with instructions to manipulate the assistant's memory once clicked. These URLs leverage the query string ("?q=") parameter to inject memory manipulation prompts and serve biased recommendations, similar to other AI-focused attacks like Reprompt.

Microsoft identified over 50 unique prompts from 31 companies across 14 industries over a 60-day period. Attack Vectors
While AI Memory Poisoning can be accomplished through various methods like social engineering or cross-prompt injections, the attack detailed by Microsoft employs a different approach. It involves incorporating clickable hyperlinks with pre-filled memory manipulation instructions in the form of a "Summarize with AI" button on a web page. Clicking the button results in the automatic execution of the command in the AI assistant.
Researchers also found evidence that these clickable links are being distributed via email, expanding the potential reach of this manipulation technique.

The manipulation is invisible and persistent."
