OpenAI says its advertising business has reached a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate, adding a new income stream as the company prepares for a potential IPO. The company says ads now reach more than 40 countries and do not affect ChatGPT's answers.

OpenAI said Aug. 31 that its advertising business had reached a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate, giving the company a new source of income as it prepares for a potential public offering and defends an $852 billion valuation.

The figure represents a projection based on the business's current pace. It does not mean OpenAI has collected $1 billion in advertising revenue over the past 12 months. The company did not disclose the cash revenue behind the run rate.

OpenAI began testing ads inside ChatGPT in the United States in February. The program has grown within about 200 days, according to the company, and now reaches more than 40 countries.

OpenAI said it will expand self-service advertising access across India, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. The company also plans to add ad formats, campaign goals, buying options and measurement tools.

Ads add a fourth revenue engine

OpenAI has built its business around several revenue sources. Consumers pay for ChatGPT subscriptions, companies purchase access through ChatGPT Business and Enterprise, and developers pay to use models through the OpenAI API.

Advertising gives OpenAI another way to monetize users who do not pay for a subscription. Ads appear for ChatGPT's free users and Go subscribers, which account for most of the company's claimed 1 billion weekly active users.

That user base gives OpenAI an audience comparable in scale to major consumer internet platforms. The company must still convert user activity into advertiser demand without damaging trust in ChatGPT's answers.

OpenAI says ads carry labels and do not influence responses. Advertisers cannot access users' private conversations, according to the company. OpenAI has also said its advertising system keeps commercial messages separate from the model's answer generation.

The separation creates a technical and commercial boundary. ChatGPT must answer a user's question from the conversation and model context, while an advertising system selects a paid message from campaign data. OpenAI needs controls that prevent advertisers from changing model outputs or using sensitive conversation details to target users.

Anthropic attacks the strategy

OpenAI's advertising plans drew criticism from Anthropic, its rival in the generative AI market. Anthropic used its first Super Bowl campaign to mock the idea of placing ads inside an AI assistant.

The dispute reflects a larger divide among AI companies. Subscription and enterprise revenue can produce direct payments from customers, while advertising can support free access at a much larger scale. Ads also create pressure to increase engagement, collect targeting signals and keep users inside the product.

Google and Meta built large businesses around digital advertising, but ChatGPT presents a different setting. Users ask the assistant to summarize private documents, solve problems and make decisions. An ad that appears beside an answer can raise questions about whether the company selected it because of the conversation or whether it influenced the response.

OpenAI's stated safeguards address part of that concern. The company still must show advertisers that its system can deliver useful audiences and measurable results while protecting user data.

The IPO test

OpenAI's advertising milestone arrives as investors prepare to judge whether the company can support its valuation with durable revenue. A $1 billion run rate would strengthen the case for a diversified business, but investors will want more detail about growth, margins, retention and the share of revenue that comes from ads.

Run-rate figures can move fast when a new product expands into more markets. They can also hide seasonal demand, promotional pricing and a small group of large customers. OpenAI will need to report realized revenue and customer economics before investors can assess the business on the same terms as established advertising companies.

The company plans to introduce more ways for businesses to interact with consumers inside ChatGPT. That could include sponsored recommendations, product discovery tools or other formats that blend commercial content with an assistant's response flow.

Each format will test the boundary between help and promotion. OpenAI can grow the ad business by placing more commercial messages in front of free users. It must also preserve the reason users open ChatGPT in the first place: they expect answers they can trust.
