Snowflake is betting big on keeping AI workloads within its data platform, arguing that enterprises get better ROI, governance, and operational efficiency when AI comes to the data rather than moving sensitive data to external AI services.

Snowflake is making a bold strategic bet that the future of enterprise AI lies in keeping workloads where the data already lives, rather than shuttling massive datasets to external AI platforms. The cloud data giant's recent moves—from a $200 million OpenAI partnership to acquiring Observe AI and launching Project SnowWork—signal a fundamental shift in how businesses should think about deploying artificial intelligence.

The Data Gravity Problem

The core thesis is deceptively simple: moving terabytes or petabytes of enterprise data to AI services creates latency, security risks, and compliance headaches. Snowflake's solution? Bring the AI to the data instead.

"What's compelling about Snowflake's recent moves isn't just the dollar amounts—it's the consistency," said Gary McConnell, CEO of solution provider VirtuIT. "Snowflake has been aggressive on the feature roadmap. They're also making investments in observability which should play to enterprise support as complexity scales."

This approach addresses a critical pain point for enterprises. Historically, organizations had to stitch together a data warehouse, a feature store, and a separate AI/ML environment. Snowflake is collapsing that stack, and customers are responding.

Enterprise Traction and Market Validation

Snowflake's customer base has grown from 7,800 in January 2023 to 13,330 this January—a 70 percent increase in three years. More tellingly, enterprise adoption has accelerated, with Forbes Global 2000 customers growing from 573 to 790 in the same period. These enterprises now contribute 43 percent of Snowflake's $4.7 billion in annual revenue.

The market enthusiasm is real. "Customers are excited about being able to bring AI workloads to the data rather than moving the data to the AI," McConnell said. "The governance story of knowing where your data is and who touched it also resonates strongly in regulated industries such as pharma, legal, and finance to name a few."

The Technical Architecture

Snowflake's strategy encompasses multiple technical initiatives:

Cortex AI Integration: The company announced a partnership with Google to bring Gemini models into its Cortex AI inference service, allowing enterprises to run AI workloads directly within Snowflake's environment.

Observe Acquisition: The planned acquisition of Observe AI provides tools for anomaly detection, root cause analysis, and operational resilience—critical for monitoring complex AI systems.

Project SnowWork: This beta service introduces role-based AI personas that understand common business workflows, terminology, and KPIs. Rather than generic AI assistants, SnowWork provides pre-configured capabilities for finance, sales, marketing, and operations teams.

"We're not assuming every sales or marketing team works the same way, but there are clear patterns in how these functions operate—how pipeline is tracked, how campaigns are measured, how forecasts are built," said Bala Kasiviswanathan, VP of Developer and AI Experiences at Snowflake.

Security and Governance by Design

Security remains paramount for enterprise AI adoption. Snowflake's approach embeds governance directly into the AI workflow. Every action Project SnowWork takes inherits role-based access controls, data policies, and audit logging automatically.

"That means it can only act on data the user is allowed to see, and every step is fully traceable," Kasiviswanathan explained. "Enterprises can inspect the steps, validate outputs, and maintain control over how and when actions are executed."

This built-in governance addresses a major concern for regulated industries where data sovereignty and compliance requirements make external AI services problematic.

Real-World Implementation

Snowflake isn't just selling a vision—it's using Project SnowWork internally. The company's sales teams can now generate data-backed QBRs (Quarterly Business Reviews), pitch decks, and customer emails all from one place. Executives receive personalized intelligence feeds with metrics tailored to their roles.

Perhaps most impressively, Snowflake has begun automating its earnings preparation using SnowWork, transforming what was once a weeks-long, cross-team effort into a streamlined process.

The Postgres Connection

Snowflake Postgres, powered by pg_lakehouse extensions, represents another strategic move. By allowing PostgreSQL to work within an organization's data lakehouse, Snowflake is broadening its appeal to developers who prefer familiar tools while maintaining the platform's unified data architecture.

The Competitive Landscape

This strategy positions Snowflake against cloud giants like AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud, which offer similar AI services but require data movement. By keeping everything within its platform, Snowflake argues it can deliver better performance, security, and total cost of ownership.

What This Means for Enterprises

The implications are significant. Companies no longer need to choose between powerful AI capabilities and data governance. They can have both within a single platform. For regulated industries, this could be the key to unlocking AI's potential without the compliance headaches.
