CachyOS 260308 brings animated desktop previews, improved hardware detection, and expanded mirror network to enhance the Arch Linux experience for both desktop and handheld users.
Arch-based Linux distribution CachyOS has released version 260308, bringing a host of user-friendly improvements to both its desktop and handheld editions. The update, which arrived yesterday, focuses on making the installation process more intuitive while enhancing overall system reliability.
For desktop and laptop users, the installation experience has been significantly enhanced with animated GIF and WebP previews for desktop environments. When selecting between Plasma, GNOME, Niri, and COSMIC during installation, users can now see animated previews of each environment before making their choice. This visual approach helps newcomers better understand what they're selecting. The desktop selection stage has also been optimized with JPEG XL support to reduce image sizes without sacrificing quality.
The update brings several under-the-hood improvements as well. GNOME and KDE installations now enable Cachy-Update by default, ensuring users have immediate access to the distribution's curated package updates. Hardware detection has been refined, and error messages for insufficient EFI partition sizes have been improved to provide clearer guidance. Additionally, Winboat installation has been streamlined through the CachyOS-Welcome utility, and keyboard navigation support has been added to improve accessibility.
Handheld users aren't left out of this update. The handheld edition has switched from SDDM to plasma-login-manager for a more integrated login experience. The default bootloader has changed to Limine, which now creates automatic snapshots for easier system recovery. However, users who prefer systemd-boot can still select it during installation.
Both editions benefit from expanded download infrastructure. CachyOS has added three new mirrors to provide faster and more reliable downloads globally: jura12 in Russia, Zyner in Sweden, and All Things Linux in Canada. This expansion should reduce download times and provide better redundancy for users worldwide.
The 260308 update demonstrates CachyOS's commitment to balancing Arch Linux's renowned flexibility with user-friendly features that make the distribution more accessible to newcomers while maintaining the power that experienced users expect.
