Ancient's new shoot 'em up Earthion arrives on PC and modern consoles this year, with a 16-bit cartridge version planned for 2026, featuring music by legendary composer Yuzo Koshiro.
Ancient has announced Earthion, a new shoot 'em up game that will be available digitally on PC and modern consoles this year, with a special 16-bit cartridge version releasing in 2026. The game combines classic shmup gameplay with modern visuals and an original soundtrack composed by the legendary Yuzo Koshiro.
Earthion is set in a dystopian future where Earth's resources have been depleted, forcing most of humanity to relocate to Mars. When hostile invaders attack Earth, mankind must mount a desperate counterattack. Players take on the role of Azusa Takanashi, an environmental researcher who pilots the state-of-the-art space fighter YK-IIA in humanity's most critical battle.
The game promises eight action-packed stages filled with stunning visuals, frenetic gameplay, and impressive special effects. What sets Earthion apart from other modern shoot 'em ups is its soundtrack, composed entirely on actual Genesis hardware by Yuzo Koshiro, the composer behind classic game soundtracks like Streets of Rage and Sonic the Hedgehog.

Earthion will be available on multiple platforms including Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and DRM-free PC. Physical editions are also coming to North America through Limited Run Games, with pre-orders for Standard and Collector's Editions open through August 10, 2025.
For players who want the complete experience, Ancient has partnered with 8BitDo to create a special Earthion-themed M30 Bluetooth Gamepad Controller, featuring custom artwork designed for the game. Additionally, the game's soundtrack will be available on both vinyl and cassette tape, with transparent red variants exclusive to Limited Run Games and transparent blue versions available worldwide through Black Screen Records.

The timing of Earthion's release comes amid a resurgence of interest in classic shoot 'em up games, with both longtime fans and new players seeking out the genre's signature high-intensity gameplay. By combining modern production values with retro elements like hardware-composed music and a planned 16-bit cartridge release, Earthion aims to bridge the gap between classic and contemporary shmup experiences.
