Apple's upcoming iPad and iPad Air updates feature only chipset upgrades - A18 for base iPad and M4 for iPad Air - with no design changes or major new features, making current models a better value.
Apple's tablet lineup is due for updates, with new base iPad and iPad Air models reportedly launching in early 2026. However, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, these refreshes appear to be minor chipset upgrades rather than meaningful improvements that would justify waiting for an upgrade.
What's changing in the new models
The base iPad will reportedly gain the A18 chip, replacing the current A16 processor. This upgrade brings Apple Intelligence support to the entry-level iPad for the first time, which could become more valuable with the upcoming iOS 26.4 update that promises enhanced Siri capabilities.
Meanwhile, the iPad Air will jump from the M3 to the M4 chip. While this represents a generational leap in processing power, the practical impact for most users will likely be minimal.
What's staying the same
Both models will reportedly retain their current designs. The iPad Air has used the same form factor since 2020, while the base iPad has remained unchanged since 2022. Neither model is expected to gain significant new features:
- iPad Air won't receive Face ID or ProMotion display technology
- Base iPad won't get a laminated display (at least not yet)
- No redesign or groundbreaking improvements are planned
The only other rumored change is the addition of Apple's N1 wireless networking chip, which has already appeared in other recent Apple products.
Should you wait to upgrade?
For most users, the answer is likely no. The M4 chip in the new iPad Air will offer faster performance, but this won't translate to meaningful improvements for typical iPad usage scenarios like web browsing, media consumption, or light productivity work.
The base iPad's addition of Apple Intelligence support via the A18 chip is more compelling, especially with enhanced Siri functionality on the horizon. However, this alone may not justify waiting if you need a device now.
Current deals make waiting less attractive
Currently, there are significant discounts on existing iPad models:
- Base iPad (A16): $299 on Amazon ($50-110 off)
- iPad Air 11" (M3): $489 on Amazon ($50-110 off)
- iPad Air 13" (M3): $679 on Amazon ($50-110 off)
These savings are particularly compelling for the iPad Air, where the M3 model offers excellent performance at a reduced price.
The bigger picture
This incremental update cycle reflects a maturing tablet market where annual upgrades often bring diminishing returns. While Apple continues to refine its silicon with each generation, the practical benefits for most users have become increasingly marginal outside of specific use cases like professional video editing or complex 3D rendering.
For the average consumer, the combination of current discounts and the modest nature of the upcoming updates makes purchasing a current-generation iPad a sensible choice rather than waiting for incremental improvements that may not significantly impact daily usage.
