Nvidia’s latest earnings report paints a picture of explosive growth, with record $46.7 billion in Q2 revenue fueled by the voracious demand for AI accelerators. Yet beneath the surface lies a startling vulnerability: nearly 40% of that revenue stems from just two anonymous customers, according to a Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filing. This intense concentration underscores both the scale of the AI infrastructure boom and the fragility beneath Nvidia’s dominance.

The Anatomy of Dependency

The filing discloses that a single customer (“Customer A”) contributed 23% of Nvidia’s total Q2 revenue, while another (“Customer B”) accounted for 16%. During the first half of the fiscal year, these two entities represented 20% and 15% of revenue, respectively. Four additional customers rounded out the top tier, each contributing between 10% and 14%. Crucially, all are direct buyers—original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), system integrators, or distributors purchasing chips straight from Nvidia.

This distinction matters. It rules out hyperscalers like Microsoft, Google, or Amazon as the named customers, though they remain pivotal indirectly. As Nvidia CFO Nicole Kress confirmed, large cloud service providers drove 50% of data center revenue—which itself comprised 88% of Nvidia’s total sales. These cloud giants source GPUs through Nvidia’s direct partners, masking their role in the concentration risk while amplifying their influence over the AI infrastructure landscape.

The Double-Edged Sword of Dominance

For developers and tech leaders, this dependency isn’t merely a financial footnote—it’s a structural hazard. Nvidia’s GPUs are the lifeblood of modern AI workloads, from training large language models to real-time inference. Yet relying on a handful of buyers creates systemic risk. As Gimme Credit analyst Dave Novosel noted:

“Concentration of revenue among such a small group of customers does present a significant risk... [but] these customers have bountiful cash on hand, generate massive amounts of free cash flow, and are expected to spend lavishly on data centers over the next couple of years.”

The immediate upside is clear: relentless investment in AI infrastructure will continue flooding the market with Nvidia’s H100 and Blackwell GPUs, empowering innovation. But the long-term implications are murkier. Should one major customer pivot to custom silicon (like Google’s TPUs) or shift spending due to economic pressures, ripple effects could disrupt GPU availability, inflate costs for startups, and force reevaluation of cloud pricing models.

Beyond the Chip Giant’s Horizon

Nvidia’s predicament reflects a broader industry crescendo—AI’s infrastructure demands are outstripping diversified supply. While hyperscalers bankroll today’s boom, their parallel efforts to develop in-house AI chips signal a looming inflection point.
