Sony Pictures Entertainment has signed an exclusive global streaming agreement with Netflix through 2032, marking a strategic pivot from its previous multi-platform distribution model.

Sony Pictures Entertainment has fundamentally restructured its streaming approach through a landmark agreement that grants Netflix exclusive global rights to its film library. The deal, spanning through 2032, represents a significant strategic shift for the studio that previously distributed content across multiple platforms.

The arrangement includes major upcoming releases such as "The Legend of Zelda," "Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse," and "The Nightingale." Films will appear exclusively on Netflix approximately 18 months after theatrical and physical media releases, with regional rollouts beginning late this year and full global availability expected by early 2029. Notably, the "Demon Slayer" franchise remains excluded due to its production ties with Sony subsidiary Aniplex.

This worldwide agreement expands upon a 2021 deal that granted Netflix streaming rights to Sony films in select markets including the U.S. and Southeast Asia. Sony's decision to expand the partnership followed measurable increases in film valuation within these regions during the initial agreement period.

"Our partnership with Netflix has always been incredibly valuable," stated Paul Littmann, Executive Vice President at Sony Pictures Television, in the official announcement.

The deal signals a departure from Sony's established strategy of distributing titles across multiple streaming services based on favorable contractual terms. While Sony maintains it will continue relationships with other platforms, the Netflix agreement establishes clear prioritization of the streaming giant.

Industry analysts point to growing challenges for Hollywood films in Asian theatrical markets as a key driver behind the move. With localized content dominating cinema screens in countries like Japan - where racing film "F1" was reportedly squeezed out by domestic productions last year - streaming provides alternative revenue streams for Western content.

Netflix's position as the dominant global streaming platform, with over 300 million subscribers across 190 markets, provides Sony with unparalleled distribution reach. The timing coincides with Netflix's pending acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, further consolidating the streaming landscape.

This exclusive arrangement provides Sony with predictable revenue streams while granting Netflix premium content as competition in the streaming space intensifies. Financial terms remain undisclosed, but the multi-year commitment represents one of the most significant studio-streaming partnerships to date.
