Amazon acquires Globalstar to expand satellite connectivity services

Amazon has acquired Globalstar, the satellite company that powers Apple's emergency satellite features, to enhance its own satellite network capabilities.

Amazon has announced the acquisition of Globalstar, the satellite company that provides the Low Earth Orbit (LEO) constellation enabling Apple's emergency satellite connectivity features on iPhones and Apple Watches. The deal represents a significant expansion of Amazon's satellite ambitions beyond its existing Kuiper constellation.

Apple's satellite partner joins Amazon

Globalstar has been the backbone of Apple's emergency satellite features since their introduction in 2022. When iPhone and Apple Watch users find themselves outside cellular or Wi-Fi coverage, these devices connect to Globalstar's satellite network to send emergency messages and share location data. Apple currently uses the majority of Globalstar's network capacity for these services.

Amazon's satellite strategy expands

The acquisition will integrate Globalstar's satellites into Amazon's existing LEO constellation, known as Amazon Leo (note the different spelling). This merger will allow Amazon to offer direct-to-device services that extend voice, text, and data coverage beyond traditional terrestrial networks. The company plans to provide these expanded connectivity services to mobile network operators for a fee.

Apple users unaffected

Importantly, Amazon has signed an agreement with Apple to ensure continuity of service. iPhone and Apple Watch users will continue to have access to satellite connectivity without interruption. In fact, the deal may improve service quality as Apple devices will potentially have access to both Globalstar's and Amazon Leo's combined satellite constellations.

Industry implications

The acquisition signals Amazon's serious commitment to competing in the satellite connectivity market, which has traditionally been dominated by companies like Iridium and Globalstar. By acquiring a proven satellite operator with existing relationships with major tech companies, Amazon gains both infrastructure and credibility in the space.

This move also highlights the growing importance of satellite connectivity as a feature in consumer devices, particularly for emergency communications and remote area coverage. As more manufacturers explore satellite capabilities, having control over satellite infrastructure becomes increasingly valuable.

The deal represents a strategic play by Amazon to leverage existing satellite infrastructure while building out its own constellation, potentially creating a more robust and comprehensive satellite network for both consumer and enterprise applications.
