Apple is reportedly testing a 200MP camera sensor for a future iPhone, matching Android competitors but potentially arriving in 2026

Apple is reportedly testing a 200MP camera sensor for a future iPhone, according to a new rumor from supply chain sources cited by tipster Digital Chat Station on Weibo. The claim suggests Apple is evaluating a 1/1.12-inch sensor, similar to the unit expected to debut on the upcoming Oppo Find X9 Ultra, which is rumored to feature dual 200MP cameras.

The tipster indicates the sensor is being tested for the primary rear camera rather than a telephoto lens. While the sensor is expected to be commercially available next year, that doesn't necessarily mean the next iPhone will feature a 200MP main camera.

This development comes as Android smartphones have been offering large 200MP sensors for some time. The move would represent a significant upgrade from the current iPhone 17 Pro Max's triple 48MP camera setup, though Apple has historically prioritized computational photography and software optimization over raw megapixel counts.

Meanwhile, another upcoming phone, the vivo X300 Ultra, has already been confirmed to feature a dual 200MP camera setup. It will use a 200MP Sony LYTIA-901 1/1.12-inch sensor for the main camera, alongside a 200MP Samsung HP0 sensor for the periscope telephoto.

The timing of this potential upgrade is interesting given recent camera-related developments in the smartphone industry. Apple was reportedly in acquisition talks with Lux Optics last year to improve the camera experience, and the iPhone 18 Pro series has entered test production phase according to recent rumors.

While the 200MP sensor testing suggests Apple is exploring higher resolution options, the company's approach to camera technology has typically focused on balancing resolution with other factors like low-light performance, color accuracy, and computational photography capabilities. The adoption of such a high-resolution sensor would likely require significant software optimization to deliver the image quality Apple's customers expect.

If Apple does eventually introduce a 200MP camera, it would mark a significant shift in the company's camera strategy, bringing it more in line with Android competitors who have embraced higher megapixel counts as a key selling point. However, given Apple's typical product development timelines, any such camera would likely appear in a 2026 iPhone model at the earliest, assuming the testing leads to a commercial implementation.
