Meanwhile, the smaller startups and individual hackers were experiencing what could only be described as a renaissance. The stories were remarkably consistent: teams that had shelved ambitious projects due to time constraints were now shipping them in days instead of months. The workflow had fundamentally changed - instead of writing code directly, developers were orchestrating 3-4 AI agents, prompting them through complex tasks with remarkable results.

This wasn't incremental improvement; it was transformative. Projects that would have taken 3-4 months of careful planning and execution were being completed in hours. The implications were staggering. We're not just talking about faster development cycles - we're talking about a fundamental shift in what's possible within the constraints of human attention and organizational resources.

The Version Control Conundrum

Perhaps the most telling moment came during Patrick Steinhardt's Git talk in Janson, the largest hall at FOSDEM. The room was packed to capacity, with people lining the walls and standing at the back. Never before had I seen such intense interest in version control systems. The SQLite Business Model

This discussion led to a fascinating insight about potential new business models in the age of AI-assisted development. SQLite's approach of being "open source, closed test" suddenly seemed prescient. The source code was available for inspection, modification, and self-hosting, but the comprehensive test suite remained proprietary.

This model offered several advantages. It preserved the benefits of open source - transparency, community contribution, and self-reliance - while creating a significant barrier for competitors. An agentic code farm of 1000 agents might be able to copy the implementation, but reproducing a comprehensive, battle-tested test suite would be exponentially more difficult and time-consuming.

The implications were profound. Companies could maintain open source projects while protecting their competitive advantages through proprietary testing infrastructure. This wasn't just about preventing copying; it was about maintaining quality advantages that would be difficult for competitors to replicate quickly.

Speed Over Intellectual Property

The entire situation reminded me of the Chinese tech scene circa 2017-2018, before the regulatory crackdown. There were no strong intellectual property protections, and companies like Alibaba, Baidu, and Tencent constantly copied each other's features. When Alipay launched mini-apps, WeChat Pay followed. When Taobao introduced livestream sales, Douyin did it better.

This environment forced companies to compete on speed and execution rather than intellectual property protection. The consumer ultimately won because companies had to innovate rapidly and offer better services at competitive prices. We're seeing similar patterns emerge in the AI lab ecosystem today. When Claude Code ships a feature, Codex, Gemini-cli, and Open Code implement it within days. The models are converging on similar capabilities, and competition is shifting to quality, price, and execution speed.

The Bazel Revolution

The most technically impressive moment of the conference came during David Zbarsky and Corentin Kerisit's talk on "Zero-sysroot hermetic LLVM cross-compilation using Bazel." What started as a demonstration of complex build systems evolved into something far more profound.

They showcased a four-stage Bazel build graph that bootstrapped the entire LLVM toolchain for all popular platforms. The process was convoluted but brilliant: build the toolchain once, use it to build different runtimes, then build it again with those runtimes. But here's the kicker - what used to take hours now took seconds thanks to Bazel and Remote Build Execution.

This wasn't just an incremental improvement. This was a fundamental shift in what's possible. Usually, building something of this quality within the Bazel ecosystem would take months or years, even for senior staff engineers. David and Corentin accomplished it in weeks, and they were candid about their secret weapon: heavy use of coding agents.

The implications cascaded through multiple industries. VLC was able to ship its Windows ARM64 build earlier than anyone else thanks to LLVM-MinGW. AMD, Intel, and Google are investing heavily in MLIR, an LLVM project, to improve their inference software stacks. AI startups like ZML and Modular depend critically on LLVM infrastructure.

The Symbiotic Future

What emerged from these conversations was a picture of mutual reinforcement between AI agents and sophisticated build systems. Bazel was getting easier to use because coding agents could handle its complexity. Meanwhile, coding agents were getting faster because Bazel provided the infrastructure for rapid, reliable builds.

This symbiosis pointed toward a future where the barriers to complex software development would continue to fall. Projects that once required years of specialized knowledge and careful orchestration could be accomplished by smaller teams using AI assistance and sophisticated build infrastructure.

The conference ended as it always does - with hoarse voices, exchanged contact information, and promises to continue conversations online. But this year felt different. The divisions were clearer, the opportunities more apparent, and the challenges more urgent.

The European tech community stands at an inflection point. The demand for AI infrastructure is real and growing, but the solutions remain unclear. Some advocate for deregulation to accelerate private sector innovation, while others push for more centralized control and funding models.

What's certain is that the landscape is changing rapidly. The companies and individuals who adapt quickly to these new paradigms - who embrace the speed advantages while maintaining quality through rigorous testing, who leverage AI assistance while preserving human oversight, who build sophisticated infrastructure while making it accessible - will be the ones who thrive in this new era.

As I boarded the train back to my hotel, coughing from three days of intense conversation but energized by the possibilities, I realized that FOSDEM 26 wasn't just another conference. It was a snapshot of a industry in the midst of profound transformation, and we were all just beginning to understand the implications.
