Fractal Design's North Momentum Edition Cases: Stealthy Design Meets Quieter Performance

Fractal Design refreshes its popular North PC cases with black wood slats, quieter Momentum fans, and XL model support for rear-connector motherboards.

Fractal Design has unveiled the North Momentum Edition, a refreshed take on its popular North PC case series that addresses two key criticisms: noise levels and aesthetic preferences. The new variants maintain the signature wood-slatted front design while introducing stealthy black oak finishes and upgraded cooling performance.

Stealthy Aesthetic with Black Wood Slats

The most immediately noticeable change is the aesthetic transformation. While the original North cases featured warm wood tones that evoked mid-century modern design, the Momentum Edition opts for black oak slats that maintain the grain texture while blending more seamlessly into darker builds. This change caters to users who appreciated the airflow benefits and design language of the North but preferred a more subdued, stealthy appearance.

Quieter Cooling Performance

Fractal Design claims significant acoustic improvements with the new Momentum 12 fans. According to internal testing, the Momentum Edition case with three 120mm fans achieves approximately 4 dBA lower noise levels compared to the original North with its 140mm Aspect fans. The new configuration measures 42.4 dBA versus 46.1 dBA at maximum fan speed.

This improvement comes despite the Momentum fans' higher maximum RPM of 2,050 compared to the 140mm fans' 1,650 RPM ceiling. The three-fan configuration also delivers better thermal performance, with average temperatures 2 degrees Celsius lower than the original design. The thermal advantage primarily benefits GPU cooling, which makes sense given the revised fan layout that increases intake area in the lower portion of the case front.

XL Model Adds Rear-Connector Support

The North Momentum XL introduces support for rear-connector motherboards, such as MSI's Project Zero options. This feature allows for cleaner internal cable management by routing connectors to the back of the motherboard tray. To accommodate the additional cable routing requirements, Fractal Design increased the space between the motherboard tray and the case door from 29mm to 37mm.

Configuration Differences

The Momentum Edition lineup features distinct fan configurations:

  • Standard Momentum Edition: Three 120mm Momentum 12 fans in the front
  • Momentum Edition XL: Configuration not specified in current details
  • Original North: Two 140mm Aspect fans in the front

The shift from two larger fans to three smaller ones might initially seem like a downgrade, but Fractal's testing suggests the opposite. The increased fan count and revised airflow path appear to deliver both quieter operation and better cooling performance.

Pricing and Market Position

Fractal Design positions the Momentum Edition at $179 for the standard model and $209 for the XL variant. This represents a $15-$25 premium over typical pricing for the original North cases. However, street prices for the original models often drop significantly during sales, with the North XL recently available for as low as $127 at Micro Center and the standard North reaching $109 during promotional periods.

The question becomes whether the aesthetic refresh, acoustic improvements, and thermal gains justify the price premium. For users who found the original North too loud or visually prominent, the Momentum Edition addresses both concerns while maintaining the core design philosophy that made the original popular.

Market Context

The North Momentum Edition enters a competitive mid-tower case market where manufacturers continually balance aesthetics, acoustics, and thermal performance. Fractal Design's approach of evolutionary refinement rather than radical redesign suggests confidence in the original North's fundamental architecture while acknowledging specific areas for improvement.

Looking Ahead

While comprehensive testing of the complete Momentum Edition cases wasn't possible at the time of announcement, Fractal Design plans to evaluate the new Momentum fans independently. This testing will provide additional data on whether the acoustic and thermal improvements translate from controlled testing environments to real-world usage scenarios.

The North Momentum Edition represents a thoughtful response to user feedback, addressing the most common criticisms while preserving the design elements that made the original successful. Whether the upgrades justify the premium will likely depend on individual priorities regarding aesthetics, noise levels, and budget constraints.
