Huawei's second-gen open-ear earbuds deliver a 17% smaller case, new materials, and promise 100% stronger audio performance while retaining the signature C-bridge design.

Huawei's FreeClip 2 open-ear earbuds have landed in our lab, marking the company's refined approach to non-invasive audio wearables following 2023's original model. These second-generation clips promise meaningful improvements across design, comfort, and audio performance while preserving the distinctive C-bridge form factor that sets them apart from traditional earbuds.

Downsized Comfort

The most immediate upgrade is physical: Huawei shrunk every dimension. Each earbud now measures 25.4mm × 26.7mm × 18.8mm and weighs just 5.1 grams – with the rear-facing "Comfort Bean" component specifically reduced by 11%. More significantly, the charging case underwent rigorous downsizing, becoming 17% narrower and 14% lighter at 39 grams. This transforms pocketability, allowing the case to slip effortlessly into small compartments where its predecessor wouldn't fit.

Material choices also evolved. The charging case features a stain-resistant denim-texture surface crafted from micro-moulded plastic, while the C-bridge connector wire adopts the same finish. Contrast comes from glossy accents on both the earpiece (positioned near the ear canal) and the Comfort Bean that hooks behind the ear helix. This combination aims for secure placement without the pressure points of in-ear designs.

Audio Architecture Upgrade

Huawei claims dramatic acoustic improvements: 100% stronger volume and air displacement versus the original FreeClip. This rests on three hardware pillars:

  1. 10.8mm Dual-Diaphragm Drivers: Larger than most open-ear competitors, these drivers handle both bass and treble frequencies via separate diaphragms
  2. Third-Gen Audio Chip: Handles core processing and Bluetooth 5.3 connectivity
  3. Dedicated NPU AI Processor: Enables real-time adaptive volume adjustment and voice enhancement during calls

Six strategically placed microphones handle beamforming and noise cancellation during calls. Battery life claims sit at 9 hours per charge and 38 hours total with the case – figures we'll verify through rigorous testing.

Ecosystem Context

As Huawei expands its audio ecosystem, the FreeClip 2 fills a specific niche: comfortable, all-day wearability without ear canal isolation. It sits alongside the noise-cancelling FreeBuds Pro series and more traditional options like the FreeBuds 7i. While compatible with any Bluetooth device, Huawei phones unlock features like NearLink connectivity – which commenters speculate could extend range up to 40 meters. We'll test wireless stability across Android and iOS.

Early impressions suggest Huawei focused on pain points from the first generation. The smaller form factor addresses portability complaints, while the new driver system promises to overcome open-ear audio limitations. If battery and audio claims hold, these could set a new standard for office workers, outdoor enthusiasts, and anyone prioritizing situational awareness. Full review coming soon with mic tests, battery verification, and comfort assessments during extended wear.
