Intel launches affordable gaming CPUs with significant performance gains, offering 15% faster gaming and double the multi-threaded performance compared to AMD's Ryzen 5 9600X, while maintaining compatibility with existing 800-series motherboards.

Intel has unveiled its latest gaming processors with the Core Ultra 200S Plus series, introducing two new CPUs that promise substantial performance improvements at competitive prices. The Core Ultra 5 250K Plus and Core Ultra 7 270K Plus are priced at $200 and $300 respectively, offering 15% geometric mean faster gaming performance compared to the current Core Ultra 2-series CPUs.

Enhanced Core Configurations

The new Plus CPUs feature significant core count upgrades. The Core Ultra 5 250K Plus now sports a 6P+12E configuration, while the Core Ultra 7 270K Plus boasts an 8P+16E setup. This represents a substantial increase from the previous 245K and 265K models, which had 6P+8E and 8P+12E configurations respectively. The addition of four extra E cores on each model provides enhanced multi-threaded performance for demanding workloads.

Multi-Threaded Performance Claims

Intel claims the Core Ultra 5 250K Plus will deliver double the multi-threaded performance of AMD's Ryzen 5 9600X, a 6-core, 12-thread CPU that launched in 2024 at $280. This comparison specifically targets content creation tasks such as rendering with Blender and Cinebench, positioning the new Plus CPUs as compelling options for both gamers and content creators.

Memory and Interconnect Improvements

Beyond core count increases, the Plus CPUs feature several architectural enhancements. While core frequencies remain essentially unchanged from the non-Plus variants, Intel has significantly improved other components, particularly the memory interconnects. These now run 900MHz faster, substantially reducing latency and improving overall system responsiveness.

Memory support has also been expanded. The new CPUs can handle 7200 MT/s DDR5 RAM, up from the previous 6400 MT/s support. For enthusiasts willing to enable the Boost BIOS profile, speeds can reach 8000 MT/s. This enhanced memory support provides additional headroom for performance tuning and future-proofing.

Intel Binary Optimization Tool

A standout feature of the Plus series is the Intel Binary Optimization Tool, which optimizes game code originally designed for other platforms, such as consoles, to run more efficiently on Intel CPUs. This approach mirrors how GPU drivers deliver game-specific optimizations through regular updates. Intel will provide game profiles that improve performance for both existing and new titles, potentially offering performance gains without requiring code changes from developers.

Motherboard Compatibility and Future Upgrades

The Core Ultra 5 250K Plus and Core Ultra 7 270K Plus maintain full compatibility with existing 800-series chipset motherboards, allowing users to upgrade without replacing their entire system. However, Intel is developing improved motherboards that will support 4-Rank CUDIMM memory, enabling up to 128GB per module and 256GB total system memory when using two modules.

These enhanced motherboards are scheduled for release later this year, providing an upgrade path for users who want to maximize the potential of their Plus CPUs.

Availability and Future Roadmap

The new CPUs will be available starting March 26, with pre-built systems featuring the Plus processors also launching on the same date. Intel has distributed samples to reviewers, with performance evaluations expected to be published a couple of days before the official launch.

Intel has indicated that more "Plus" CPUs will be released in the future, positioning them as ultimate versions of each generation's CPU technology. This strategy aims to provide upgrade paths that don't require motherboard replacements, potentially reducing upgrade costs and e-waste.

The Core Ultra 200S Plus series represents Intel's continued push to balance performance, price, and upgradeability in the competitive gaming CPU market, offering compelling options for users looking to enhance their systems without complete overhauls.
