PGYTECH's Retrova kit transforms iPhones into professional cameras with detachable grips, teleconverters, and pro app controls, promising DSLR-like functionality for mobile photography enthusiasts.
Chinese accessory maker PGYTECH has launched the Retrova camera kit on Kickstarter, bringing DSLR-style controls and professional zoom capabilities to iPhone users. The system, which follows similar designs from Vivo and Oppo, includes a detachable camera grip with physical controls and a 2.35x teleconverter that boosts iPhone telephoto lenses to 12x optical zoom equivalents.
The basic kit starts at $72 plus shipping, while the complete package with teleconverter and accessories costs $184. Both versions are compatible with iPhone 16 Pro, 16 Pro Max, 17 Pro, and 17 Pro Max models.
Physical Controls Meet Smartphone Photography
The Retrova grip features a two-stage shutter button for focus-and-shoot functionality, a multi-function button, zoom rocker, and control dial for adjusting exposure and ISO settings. Unlike competing kits from Chinese manufacturers, PGYTECH added a microSD card slot capable of writing ProRes video at speeds up to 312 MB/s directly to external storage.
A 300 mAh battery powers the grip's functionality rather than serving as a power bank for the iPhone itself. The kit includes a carrying strap and tripod mount for stable shooting.
Professional Optics With 12x Zoom Capability
The star feature is the 2.35x teleconverter that screws onto iPhone telephoto lenses. When paired with the iPhone 17 Pro's 4x telephoto lens, it creates a 235mm equivalent 10x optical zoom. Using the iPhone 16 Pro's 5x telephoto lens yields a 282mm equivalent 12x telephoto lens.
PGYTECH promises "professional optics made of extra-low dispersion glass with 13 elements" for improved image quality when photographing distant subjects. The company also offers optional accessories including a 2x teleconverter, filter adapter rings (62mm/67mm), remote controls, and magnetically attachable fill lights.
Pro App With Retro Interface
The companion camera app features a retro GUI design with various filters and a full pro mode for manual control over photos and video. This gives iPhone users DSLR-like control over their mobile photography without the bulk of traditional camera equipment.
Apple's Rumored Teleconverter Plans
The Retrova launch comes as Apple reportedly tests its own external teleconverters for future iPhone Pro models. Leakers suggest Apple may introduce such accessories alongside the iPhone 18 Pro generation later this year, potentially making PGYTECH's solution a preview of official Apple capabilities.
Crowdfunding Considerations
PGYTECH promises March delivery for the camera grip and April for the complete kit. While crowdfunding always carries risks of delays or losses, PGYTECH's established reputation as a camera and smartphone accessory manufacturer makes this project relatively low-risk compared to unknown startups.
The kit's upgrade path to iPhone 18 Pro appears straightforward, requiring only a replacement protective case rather than an entirely new system.
