Stack Overflow now allows all registered users to access chat rooms with just 1 reputation point, replacing the previous 20-point requirement. This update includes enhanced moderation tools and onboarding features to support community growth.

Today marks a significant milestone for Stack Overflow: we've opened public chat room access to all registered users, requiring just 1 reputation point to participate. This change dismantles a longstanding barrier for newcomers, transforming chat into an immediate entry point for community connection.
Why We Lowered the Barrier
Previously, chat access required 20 reputation points—a hurdle for new users. Our May 2025 launch of Stack Overflow and Stack Exchange Lobbies (exclusive to 1-rep users) proved a game-changer: 60% of Lobby participants had fewer than 20 reputation points. This demonstrated that immediate chat access drives engagement, empowering newcomers to:
- Discuss projects in real-time
- Ask quick support questions
- Build confidence through early interactions
Scaling Across All Public Chat Rooms
Based on the Lobbies' success, we're extending 1-rep access to all public chat rooms. This creates pathways for users to:
- Find niche technical communities faster
- Transition from chat to Q&A contributions
- Establish peer networks organically
Enhanced Onboarding & Safety
Example: Stack Overflow Lobby onboarding card
To ensure smooth adoption, we introduced:
- Custom Onboarding Cards: Room owners can now design welcome guides outlining:
- Room-specific expectations
- Participation best practices
- Topic boundaries
- Advanced Moderation Tools:
- Human identity validation to block spam bots
- Expanded moderator capabilities to combat malicious behavior
- Real-time content filtering
