Stack Overflow launches redesigned beta site, expands open-ended questions to all users, and updates AI Assist with faster responses and new features.

Welcome to the March recap of what’s new on stackoverflow.com. This month brings significant changes to how the platform looks, feels, and functions, with a redesigned beta site, expanded question formats, and enhanced AI capabilities.

Stack Overflow Redesign Now in Beta

The most substantial update this month is the beta release of the redesigned Stack Overflow. This comprehensive update transforms the site's look and feel, how people engage on the platform, and how content is created and shared.

The redesign aims to build "the space for every technical conversation, centered on real human-to-human connection and powered by AI when it helps most." Whether you've been on Stack Overflow for over a decade or are brand new to the platform, the team invites you to explore the beta experience and share your feedback.

Expanding Open-Ended Questions to All Users

What’s new at Stack Overflow: March 2026 - Stack Overflow

On February 19, 2026, Stack Overflow expanded its opinion-based questions experiment to all users. This marks a significant shift from the platform's traditional focus on "single right answer" questions.

Now, all questions and answers can include experience-based recommendations, insights, and peer perspectives. This expansion recognizes that real-world technical solutions often require more nuanced information than a single answer can provide.

The change aims to make it easier to ask questions without worrying about perfect formatting and help technologists find the answers they need faster. As this experiment continues to develop, expect to see changes to the UI and guidelines in the coming weeks.

AI Assist Updates

What’s new at Stack Overflow: March 2026 - Stack Overflow

With the Stack Overflow redesign beta, you can now try out AI Assist in the new look and feel. While you can toggle between the "classic" and beta site, the majority of AI Assist's most recent changes have only been implemented on the redesigned experience.

Notable updates include:

  • Faster and more accurate responses thanks to switching to an agentic RAG infrastructure
  • Source cards moved to the bottom of responses to prioritize the answer
  • Ability to pin, rename, and delete chats
  • More compact and scannable source card UI design
  • Improved feedback flow with clearer response handling
  • "More from the community" links now display Stack Exchange site logos

You can try out these updates on beta.stackoverflow.com and share feedback or report bugs as the team continues to build.

New Custom Badges for Challenges

In February, Stack Overflow announced custom badges as part of the last Community Asks Sprint. Four new custom badges have been rolled out for Challenges:

  • Challenge Coder (bronze) - won 1 challenge
  • Challenge Hacker (silver) - won 10 challenges
  • Challenge Virtuoso (gold) - won 20 challenges
  • Challenge Creator (silver) - authored 1 challenge (can be awarded multiple times)

Entries submitted during the "open" challenge period that are selected as winning entries, or "passed" in pass/fail challenges, are eligible for the Coder, Hacker, or Virtuoso badges. All users who author challenges will receive the Creator badge.

Community Spotlight: The Populist Badge

This month's community spotlight highlights the Populist badge, awarded to users when their answer becomes the highest-scoring answer on a question and outscores an accepted answer (with a score of more than 10) by more than double. This badge can be awarded multiple times.

The Populist badge recognizes users who contribute high-quality content and keep the library of knowledge up to date. These answers often show alternate approaches to solving problems or replace earlier solutions that have become outdated as technology evolves.

Stack Overflow celebrates all 21 community members who earned this badge in February and thanks them for their thoroughness and dedication.

As Stack Overflow continues to evolve, these updates reflect a broader vision for technical knowledge sharing that balances traditional Q&A with more nuanced, experience-based discussions and AI-powered assistance.
