WhatsApp Web beta users can now make voice and video calls, with group calls and wider rollout coming soon.

WhatsApp Web is finally getting voice and video calling capabilities, starting with beta users and expanding to all users in the coming weeks. The feature, which has been in development for about a year, brings WhatsApp Web closer to feature parity with the official desktop apps.

The rollout begins with one-on-one calls for WhatsApp Web beta testers. Users can simply open a chat and click the call button to start either a voice or video call without needing to install the desktop application. This marks a significant improvement for users who prefer the web interface over desktop apps.

According to WABetaInfo, the web-based calls use end-to-end encryption powered by Signal's protocol, maintaining the same security standards as other WhatsApp platforms. For video calls, the Screen Share feature is available, allowing users to share their screen during calls.

While individual calls are rolling out now, group calls remain under development. When launched, group calls are expected to support up to 32 participants and include features like call links and scheduled calls. No specific timeline has been provided for group call availability on WhatsApp Web.

To access the beta features, users can enroll through Settings > Help and Feedback, then toggle the "Join the Beta" switch. While enrollment doesn't guarantee immediate access to calling features, beta participants will likely receive new WhatsApp Web features first as they roll out.

The expansion of WhatsApp Web's capabilities reflects Meta's ongoing efforts to make its messaging platform more versatile across different devices and interfaces. This update is particularly significant for users who rely on web-based applications for their daily communication needs.
