Overview

DRAM is the most common type of RAM used in modern computers. It stores data in capacitors that must be periodically refreshed (recharged) to maintain the data, hence the name 'dynamic.'

Key Characteristics

  • Density: Can store a large amount of data in a small physical space.
  • Cost: Relatively inexpensive to manufacture compared to SRAM.
  • Volatility: Loses data when power is removed or if not refreshed.

Primary Use

DRAM is used for the main system memory in computers, smartphones, and servers.
