Acer's refreshed 18-inch gaming powerhouse now packs Intel's latest processors and Nvidia's top mobile GPU
Acer has officially unveiled the upgraded Predator Helios Neo 18 AI (PHN18-I71), bringing substantial hardware improvements to its 18-inch gaming laptop lineup over a year after the original PHN18-72 debuted. The refreshed model arrives with Intel's latest Arrow Lake-HX Plus processors and the option for Nvidia's powerful GeForce RTX 5080 mobile GPU, marking a significant performance leap for the gaming-focused machine.
What's New Under the Hood
The most notable upgrade centers on the processor options. Where last year's model offered Core Ultra 7 255HX or Core Ultra 9 275HX chips, the new PHN18-I71 now features the Core Ultra 7 270HX Plus or the flagship Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus. These Arrow Lake-HX Plus processors promise improved performance and efficiency over their predecessors.
On the graphics front, Acer has made a substantial leap. The previous generation topped out with the GeForce RTX 5070 Ti, but the new model now offers the GeForce RTX 5080. While Acer hasn't confirmed the exact power configuration for this GPU, the existing Predator Helios Neo 18 delivered up to 140W with Dynamic Boost, suggesting similar capabilities for the refreshed model.
Display and Design Changes
Interestingly, Acer has streamlined the display options. The Mini LED variant that was available in the previous generation has been discontinued. Instead, the PHN18-I71 now exclusively features a 240Hz IPS panel with 2.5K resolution, 500 nits peak brightness, 3ms response times, and 100% DCI-P3 color space coverage. This represents a focused approach to the display, prioritizing high refresh rates and color accuracy over the previous model's variety.
Battery and Weight Considerations
The laptop's battery capacity has seen a modest increase from 90Wh to 92Wh. However, this small gain comes with a weight penalty - the device now tips the scales at 3.4kg, up 200g from its predecessor. This weight increase likely stems from the enhanced cooling requirements of the more powerful components.
Availability and Pricing
Acer plans to roll out the Predator Helios Neo 18 AI across Africa, Europe, and the Middle East starting in June, with Australia and North America receiving the laptop in July. While official pricing hasn't been announced, the previous model with RTX 5070 Ti was priced at $2,444 on Amazon, suggesting the new RTX 5080 configuration will command a premium.
How It Compares to Competitors
The refreshed Predator Helios Neo 18 AI enters a competitive gaming laptop market where manufacturers are pushing the boundaries of mobile gaming performance. The combination of Intel's latest Arrow Lake-HX Plus processors with Nvidia's RTX 5080 GPU positions it as a high-end option, though potential buyers should consider whether the weight increase and single display option align with their needs compared to lighter alternatives or models offering more display flexibility.
The move to exclusively offer the 240Hz IPS panel with 2.5K resolution and wide color gamut coverage suggests Acer is targeting content creators and esports enthusiasts who prioritize refresh rate and color accuracy over the versatility of multiple display options.
For gamers and power users seeking top-tier mobile performance in a large form factor, the upgraded Predator Helios Neo 18 AI represents a compelling option, though the weight increase may give pause to those who frequently transport their gaming rig.
