Apple's first iOS 26.4 beta introduces encrypted RCS messaging, redesigned interfaces, and theft prevention tools, while delaying anticipated Gemini-powered Siri enhancements.

Apple has launched the initial developer beta of iOS 26.4, marking the first test build of this maintenance-focused update. While earlier reports suggested iOS 26.4 would include Siri enhancements powered by Google's Gemini AI technology, these features appear delayed despite Apple's confirmed partnership with Google signed in January. The Gemini integration aims to power conversational AI improvements Apple has been developing internally for two years.
This release follows the feature-light iOS 26.3 update that primarily introduced cross-platform switching tools for Android users and cellular location controls for devices with Apple's C1/C1X modems. The new beta builds upon this foundation with several tangible additions developers should note.

Documented Changes in Beta 1
Encrypted RCS Messaging: The Messages app now includes settings for end-to-end encrypted RCS communication between iOS and Android devices, accessible via Settings > Messages > RCS. This implements Apple's 2025 commitment to support cross-platform messaging standards.
Apple Music Interface Refresh: Playlists, albums, and artist pages feature updated layouts with bolder typography and revised spacing. The redesign prioritizes album artwork visibility while maintaining functional consistency.
Wallpaper Gallery Overhaul: The wallpaper selection interface adopts a new grid-based presentation with categorized sections. Users can now swipe horizontally through collections instead of vertical scrolling.
Anticipated Features
While not yet present in this beta, documentation references several planned additions:
Enhanced Video Podcasts: Apple Podcasts will gain interactive video features including chapter navigation and supplemental content displays.
Rosetta 2 Sunset Notice: macOS 26.4 will display warnings when launching Intel-based apps, signaling Apple's transition away from translation technology.
Theft Prevention Lock: All iPhones will activate hardware-based protection against unauthorized parts swapping, expanding on existing Activation Lock capabilities.
Developer Considerations
The encrypted RCS implementation requires both sender and recipient devices to support the standard. Test messaging flows between iOS and Android devices using the Messages API documentation.
Music app UI changes involve updated MusicKit components. Verify playlist embedding and Now Playing integrations.
Wallpaper API remains consistent despite visual changes, but test dynamic wallpaper rendering on various device resolutions.
Apple typically releases 4-5 betas before public launch. Developers should test core functionality against these initial changes while monitoring subsequent builds for Gemini integration. The current beta requires Xcode 30.2 and is available through Apple's Developer Portal.

As beta testing progresses, we'll report on performance characteristics and additional features. With WWDC 2026 approaching, this update serves as a bridge between major iOS releases rather than a feature-heavy overhaul.
