Google has confirmed that its Pixel 9 lineup, including the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, and Pixel 9 Pro Fold, will receive an update enabling AirDrop-like file sharing with iPhones through Quick Share. This follows the feature's debut on the Pixel 10 series and is part of Google's broader effort to enhance cross-ecosystem compatibility.

Google is extending the AirDrop-compatible functionality in its Quick Share feature to the Pixel 9 series, making it easier for owners of these devices to share files with iPhone users. This move comes after the same capability was introduced for the Pixel 10 lineup last year, and it represents a significant step in bridging the gap between Android and iOS ecosystems.

The update will cover the entire Pixel 9 family: the standard Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, and the foldable Pixel 9 Pro Fold. According to Google, the feature will be rolled out in the coming days through either a server-side update or a full software update. This means users won't necessarily need to download a large system update to get the functionality.

Google announced the expansion via an official post on X (formerly Twitter). The integration works by allowing Pixel 9 devices to appear as available targets in the AirDrop sharing menu on iPhones when Quick Share is active. Similarly, iPhone users will appear as share targets on the Pixel 9's Quick Share interface. The feature uses a combination of Bluetooth for device discovery and Wi-Fi Direct or peer-to-peer Wi-Fi for the actual file transfer, ensuring fast and secure transfers without needing an internet connection.

This update is part of a larger initiative by Google to make cross-platform sharing more accessible. The company has stated that it plans to bring AirDrop compatibility to more Android devices beyond the Pixel series in the near future. This would mean that a wider range of Android phones from different manufacturers could seamlessly share files with iPhones, reducing the ecosystem lock-in that has traditionally made switching between platforms more difficult.

The addition of AirDrop support in Quick Share addresses a common pain point for users who frequently share files between Android and iOS devices. Previously, users had to resort to third-party apps or slower methods like email. With this update, sharing becomes as simple as selecting the nearby device in the share menu. It's a practical enhancement that reflects Google's commitment to interoperability and user convenience.

As the rollout begins, Pixel 9 owners should keep an eye out for the update and ensure that both Bluetooth and location services are enabled (as required for device discovery). This feature represents a tangible improvement in cross-platform usability, and it's a welcome addition for anyone invested in the Android ecosystem but regularly interacting with iPhone users.
