iOS 27 to Bring Major Redesign to AirPods Settings UI, Addressing Years of UI Clutter

Apple is preparing to overhaul the AirPods settings interface in iOS 27, aiming to streamline the increasingly cluttered menu that has accumulated features over the years without a cohesive redesign.

According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple is working on significant improvements to how users interact with AirPods settings, with a complete UI redesign planned for iOS 27. The current AirPods settings interface, which appears automatically at the top of the Settings app when AirPods are connected, has become increasingly complex as Apple has added numerous features over the years without fundamentally rethinking the layout.

The AirPods ecosystem has expanded dramatically since the original AirPods launched in 2016. What began as simple wireless earbuds have evolved into sophisticated audio devices with health features, spatial audio capabilities, and even hearing aid functionality. Each new feature—head gestures, adaptive transparency, conversation awareness, and more—has been essentially bolted onto the original settings framework, resulting in what many users describe as an overwhelming and disorganized interface.

"The new design will be 'more functional, better organized and more streamlined,'" reports Gurman. This suggests Apple is finally addressing the UI concerns that have grown alongside the product's feature set. The redesign will likely improve information hierarchy, making it easier for users to find and access the functions they need most frequently.

Interestingly, while Apple Watch and Vision Pro both receive dedicated companion apps on the iPhone's home screen, AirPods will remain confined to the Settings app. This indicates Apple's approach to device management still prioritizes certain products with dedicated real estate while others remain nested within system settings.

The UI improvements are expected to arrive alongside iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27, suggesting a cross-platform consistency in how AirPods are managed across Apple's ecosystem. Users with multiple Apple devices will likely benefit from a unified experience when configuring their AirPods regardless of which device they're using.

This redesign comes at a crucial time as Apple continues to expand the AirPods family with specialized models like the AirPods Pro with USB-C, AirPods Max, and upcoming rumored additions. A more intuitive settings interface could help users better understand and utilize the increasingly sophisticated features available across these products.

Apple will officially unveil these changes at its WWDC conference on June 8, where the main focus will be on a major redesign of Siri, now oriented toward a more modern chatbot-like experience backed by new AI models using Google Gemini technology. The AirPods UI refresh represents one part of Apple's broader software update strategy for 2026.

For users frustrated with the current AirPods settings interface, this long-awaited redesign should provide a much-needed improvement in usability and organization. As AirPods continue to integrate more health and accessibility features, a cleaner interface will be essential for helping users discover and utilize these capabilities effectively.
