Apple's upcoming foldable iPhone is expected to feature a 4:3 aspect ratio inner display with iPadOS-inspired multitasking and new app layouts, while still running iOS rather than iPadOS.
Apple's first foldable iPhone, reportedly launching later this year, will feature a wide inner display with a 4:3 aspect ratio and bring several iOS improvements inspired by iPadOS, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. The device is expected to offer a tablet-like experience on its main screen while maintaining the core iOS foundation.
iPad-inspired interface on a compact form factor
The foldable's inner display will be roughly the same size as an iPad mini, prompting Apple to develop new iOS app layouts and navigation elements. The report indicates that users can expect "iPad-like layouts" and the ability to run side-by-side apps on the larger inner screen. This includes iPad-style sidebars in apps, bringing a more desktop-class interface to the foldable device.
However, Apple is taking a measured approach to the tablet-like experience. The iPhone Fold will not support windowed multitasking like the iPad, nor will it run iPad apps directly. Instead, it will feature "simpler multitasking elements" rather than the full desktop-like interface seen in iPadOS 26. This suggests Apple wants to maintain the familiar iOS experience while adding tablet-style productivity features where they make sense on the larger display.
Display technology and camera setup
According to the report, Apple is developing new display technology specifically for the iPhone Fold that aims to significantly reduce the crease on the inner screen while also improving durability. This addresses one of the most common criticisms of current foldable devices - the visible crease that forms along the fold line.
The device is also expected to feature a hole-punch camera on the cover display, with a dual rear camera setup and a hole-punch camera on the inner display as well. For security and authentication, Apple plans to integrate a Touch ID sensor into the power button, following the design approach used in some iPad models.
Branding and positioning
Recent rumors suggest Apple may brand its first foldable as the iPhone Ultra, positioning it as a premium device above the standard iPhone lineup. This naming strategy would align with Apple's existing product hierarchy, where the Apple Watch Ultra sits above the standard Apple Watch models.
