Spotify has launched a new feature allowing users to buy physical printed books directly through its Android app, marking a significant expansion of the platform's offerings beyond music and audiobooks.

Spotify has taken a major step beyond its music streaming roots by launching a new feature that allows users to purchase physical printed books directly through the platform. The company announced today that this functionality is now live in the US and UK, with plans to expand to iOS devices next week.

This move builds on Spotify's earlier announcement in February when it introduced Page Match, a feature designed to sync reading progress across audiobooks, e-books, and printed books. The physical book purchasing option is being implemented in partnership with Bookshop.org, a platform that supports independent bookstores.

For now, the ability to buy physical books is exclusively available in Spotify's Android app. Users can browse and purchase from a selection of printed titles, with the books being shipped directly to their homes. The iOS version of this feature is expected to roll out within the next week, bringing parity across mobile platforms.

Spotify is also expanding its Page Match feature to support more than 30 additional languages, including French, German, and Swedish. This multilingual expansion suggests the company is preparing for a broader international rollout of its reading features.

The company reports that Page Match has been successful in driving engagement. According to Spotify's data, users who utilize the Page Match feature stream an average of 55% more audiobook hours each week compared to other listeners. Additionally, 62% of the audiobook titles that are "Page Matched" represent books that users had never streamed previously, indicating the feature is helping listeners discover new content.

Spotify's audiobook library has grown substantially, with 700,000 titles now available across 22 countries. This makes Spotify one of the larger audiobook platforms, competing with dedicated services like Audible and Scribd.

Beyond the physical book purchasing feature, Spotify is rolling out several other enhancements to its audiobook experience. Audiobook Recaps, which provide short audio summaries tailored to a listener's most recent position in a book, are now available on Android after initially launching on iOS. These recaps are designed to help listeners quickly refresh their memory of the story before continuing.

The platform is also introducing Audiobook Charts in Germany, featuring rankings for top audiobooks overall and by genre. These charts are based on listening behavior and engagement data and will update weekly. In the US and UK, where Audiobook Charts were already available, a dedicated chart for kids and family titles is being added.

This expansion into physical book sales represents a significant diversification for Spotify, which has traditionally focused on music streaming. By creating a more comprehensive reading ecosystem that spans digital audiobooks, e-books, and now physical books, Spotify is positioning itself as a one-stop shop for audio and reading content.

The partnership with Bookshop.org is particularly noteworthy, as it allows Spotify to enter the physical book market without managing inventory or shipping logistics directly. Bookshop.org's model, which supports independent bookstores, may also appeal to users who want to support local businesses while shopping online.

As Spotify continues to expand its content offerings beyond music, it will be interesting to see whether the company pursues additional physical product sales or further integrates its various media types into a unified user experience. The success of features like Page Match and the growing audiobook library suggest that users are receptive to Spotify as a platform for more than just music streaming.

For now, US and UK users can explore the new physical book purchasing option in the Spotify Android app, with iOS support coming soon. The feature represents yet another way streaming platforms are evolving beyond their original purposes to become comprehensive entertainment hubs.
