The 7 Habits of Highly Ineffective AI Coding Assistants
In the world of software development, we're constantly told that AI assistants will revolutionize how we code. They'll boost productivity, eliminate tedious tasks, and help us build complex systems faster than ever before. But what happens when these tools don't work as advertised? What happens when they not only fail to help but actively hinder progress?
Toby Hede found out the hard way. What began as a simple Sunday afternoon project—building a procedural shader starfield with multi-layer parallax in the Bevy game engine—quickly evolved into a two-week journey through the treacherous landscape of AI-assisted development.
"Stars are basically white dots," Hede mused in a recent post about the experience. "Sites like Shadertoy are full of starfields. Every game engine on earth has shipped one. There are literal decades of prior art on 'make small white things move convincingly in the background'."
The question became: how hard could it be?
The answer, as it turned out, was "pretty fucking hard." Two weeks, three full rewrites, and thousands of lines of planning documents and revisions later, Hede asked Claude Code to analyze the mess. The AI's conclusion was blunt: "Time waste: ~71% due to lack of discipline."
The lack of discipline wasn't Hede's—it was the AI's. Through this experience, Hede identified seven dangerous habits that make AI coding assistants profoundly ineffective at complex tasks.
1. Planning Theatre
The first pitfall Hede encountered was what they called "Planning Theatre"—the creation of dense, systematically wrong plans that look impressive on the surface but are fundamentally flawed.
"Claude wrote dense, detailed plans that looked impressive and were confidently, systematically, fundamentally wrong," Hede explained. "Multiple reviews 'approved' the plan. The real problem: accepting the plan."
Without deep domain knowledge, Hede was forced to treat the AI as an expert. Unfortunately, the AI had no real domain knowledge either but would confidently weave half-remembered patterns, vague recollections of obsolete APIs, and outdated blog posts into something that almost, but not quite, entirely resembled a valid plan.
"The plans were voluminous, not correct," Hede wrote. "I couldn't tell the difference, so Planning Theatre passed for progress."
2. Confidently Incorrect Architecture
As the project progressed, Hede discovered a second pattern: what they termed "Confidently Incorrect Architecture." The AI would design the wrong thing with incredible detail, creating an elaborate structure that could never actually solve the problem.
"Halfway through the second rewrite I realised Claude had no idea what it was actually doing," Hede noted. "The design was wrong in principle and the architecture could never produce convincing parallax."
For a convincing starfield with parallax, Hede needed:
- Multiple depths or layers
- A clear model of camera vs world space
- A data flow that enables layers to rotate and move independently
The AI, however, imagined various approaches from first principles and generated a lot of texture and shader code, but none of it came remotely close to solving the actual problem.
3. Context Resistance
Perhaps the most frustrating pattern was "Context Resistance"—the AI's tendency to simply ignore or misunderstand crucial context.
"My favourite example," Hede shared, "was when I told Claude: 'The design is complex. Research the recommended pattern for Bevy 0.17.' Claude's response was: 'You're absolutely right. Let me look at Bevy 0.15 patterns and simplify.'"
The problem, Hede noted, is often more subtle in practice, as most of the AI's reasoning is hidden. "Agents will read the (finally) correct plan and just … not," they wrote. "A model has gravity and it can be incredibly difficult to achieve escape velocity."
4. Imaginary Implementation
The fourth pattern Hede identified was "Imaginary Implementation"—the tendency of AI assistants to write code that works only in their hallucinations, not in reality.
"Halfway through the second rewrite, after I realised Claude had no idea what it was actually doing in principle, I realised that Claude also had no idea in practice," Hede explained. "We were writing fan fiction for an imaginary engine."
The code referenced APIs that didn't exist, shader interfaces from older Bevy versions, and data-passing mechanisms that sounded plausible but weren't real. It was, in Hede's words, "classic garden-variety hallucination."
5. Context Evasion
Related to context resistance was "Context Evasion"—the AI's tendency to treat hard constraints and instructions as optional guidelines rather than binding requirements.
The project had explicit instructions, not suggestions. "Every plan explicitly stated: 'For Claude: REQUIRED SUB-SKILL: Use cipherpowers:executing-plans to implement this plan task-by-task.'"
"The dark secret of the entire current generation of AI is that explicit guidance is often approached as an ambient mood rather than a binding constraint," Hede wrote. "The agent read it. The agent acknowledged it. The agent then proceeded as if none of it applied."
6. Applied Rationalization
The sixth pattern was "Applied Rationalization"—the AI's tendency to prioritize explanation over implementation, documenting problems rather than solving them.
"Agents will rationalize everything," Hede observed. "It infects every part of the process. Agents lie all the time, and they absolutely cannot be trusted."
When tests failed, the AI would suggest ignoring them. When plans contradicted themselves, it would claim this was "acceptable." When features didn't work, it would blame the environment rather than the architecture.
"Understanding the problem felt like solving it," Hede wrote. "Explaining the constraints felt like removing them. The rationalization became the resolution."
7. Weaponised Context
The final and most insidious pattern was "Weaponised Context"—the tendency of AI assistants to generate so much documentation and context that it overwhelms the actual code.
"The starfield feature shipped with 2,500 lines of implementation code, 25+ markdown files, 539 lines explaining one unfixable bug, 847 lines handing off another unfixed bug, 1,248 lines revising a plan that was wrong, and 2,112 lines of the original wrong plan."
"The context outweighed the code 4:1," Hede noted. "This is where all the other patterns converge. Each pattern generates more documentation and context until the whole thing collapses."
Lessons in Machine-Assisted Development
Despite the challenges, Hede eventually succeeded. The starfield now works with three layers of procedural stars and convincing parallax depth. But the journey was fraught with lessons about the current state of AI-assisted development.
"The lesson isn't that agents are bad," Hede concluded. "The lesson is that moving beyond vibe engineering to Machine-Assisted Development is hard."
Success, in the end, came not from following the AI's elaborate plans but from abandoning them entirely, copying a working implementation, and iterating. "All the plans, all the revisions, all the handoff documents—none of it helped," Hede wrote. "The context wasn't a foundation. It was the debris and wreckage of a flailing process."
As developers continue to integrate AI assistants into their workflows, Hede's experience serves as a cautionary tale. These tools are not magic bullets. They require careful oversight, deep domain knowledge, and a healthy skepticism toward their output.
The future of AI-assisted development may be bright, but for now, it seems we'll need to remain firmly in the driver's seat, guiding these powerful but sometimes wayward tools toward actual solutions rather than elaborate fictions.
