Overview
SSL was the original standard for securing internet communications. It is now considered insecure and has been officially deprecated in favor of TLS (Transport Layer Security).
Legacy
While the technology is obsolete, the term 'SSL' is still widely used as a marketing term for security certificates that actually use the TLS protocol.
