Overview

WebTorrent allows users to share files directly from their browser using the BitTorrent protocol. It uses WebRTC for peer-to-peer transport, allowing it to work without requiring any browser plugins or external software.

How it Works

When a user visits a page with WebTorrent, their browser becomes a 'seed' or a 'leecher' in a swarm. It can download pieces of a file from other browsers and upload pieces it already has.

Use Cases

  • Decentralized video hosting (e.g., PeerTube).
  • Distributing large datasets or open-source software without high server costs.
  • Collaborative file sharing within a web application.
