OpenAI is enhancing ChatGPT's Temporary Chat functionality with a notable upgrade currently in testing. This development resolves a key user dilemma by allowing personalized interactions while preserving the feature's core privacy safeguards.

The Temporary Chat feature, identifiable by a pill-shaped button in ChatGPT's interface, originally provided a clean-slate conversation environment. When activated, it ignored the user's chat history, memories, and conversation patterns while still honoring custom instructions. Crucially, these temporary sessions didn't appear in chat history logs and weren't used for model training.

Security researcher Mayank Parmar highlighted the new capability: "The upgraded implementation now retains personalization elements like memory, conversation history, and tone preferences during temporary sessions. This bridges the gap between customized assistance and privacy protection." Despite this change, the chats remain transient—OpenAI confirms they still won't appear in your history or train models, though the company may retain copies for up to 30 days for safety reviews.

This upgrade addresses a common workflow challenge. Users previously had to choose between privacy and personalized responses. Now, activating Temporary Chat (via the top-right interface button) maintains individual interaction styles without compromising data hygiene. This is particularly valuable for sensitive topics where users want contextual responses without permanent records.

Concurrently, OpenAI is deploying an age prediction model to enforce content safeguards. This system analyzes conversation patterns and behavior to identify underage users. When teenagers are detected, access to mature content involving violence, graphic material, or dangerous challenges is restricted. Adult users flagged incorrectly can verify their age to restore full functionality.
