Google Pixel 9 Series to Gain AirDrop Compatibility Through Quick Share Update

Google appears ready to expand its cross-platform file sharing capabilities to the Pixel 9 series, enabling direct file transfers between Android devices and iPhones through Quick Share. This development follows the feature's initial rollout to Pixel 10 devices in late 2025.

Evidence from recent Android Canary builds indicates Google has added the necessary system components to enable Quick Share compatibility with Apple's AirDrop technology on Pixel 9 models. The implementation uses Apple's AirDrop protocol within Google's file-sharing interface, allowing Pixel users to appear as share targets on iOS devices without requiring additional apps.

Notably, these system files remain absent from Pixel 9a and Pixel 8 series builds in the same Canary channel, suggesting Google is prioritizing the flagship Pixel 9 lineup first. This aligns with Google's previous commitment to gradually extend interoperability to older devices following the Pixel 10 launch.

The technical implementation requires both Bluetooth for device discovery and peer-to-peer Wi-Fi for actual file transfers.
