Samsung is considering adding the Virtual Aperture feature from the Galaxy S26 series to the Galaxy S25 lineup, potentially improving telephoto camera capabilities through a software update.
Samsung is reportedly considering bringing a camera feature from its upcoming Galaxy S26 lineup to last year's flagship devices, potentially giving Galaxy S25 owners access to enhanced photography capabilities without requiring a hardware upgrade.
According to reports from Korean media, the company is looking into adding Virtual Aperture functionality to the telephoto cameras on the Galaxy S25, S25+, and S25 Ultra. This feature, which will debut on the S26 series, allows users to artificially simulate different aperture settings, giving more control over background blur effects in portrait photography.
Virtual Aperture is already available on Galaxy S25 devices through the Expert RAW app, but currently only works with the main camera. Expanding this to the telephoto lens would significantly enhance its utility, particularly for portrait shots where telephoto provides a more flattering perspective and better subject separation.
The feature works entirely through software processing, which means it could theoretically be added to existing devices via a firmware update. This approach aligns with Samsung's strategy of extending software support to its flagship lineup, though the company hasn't officially confirmed whether the update will materialize.
Interestingly, this move comes as Samsung appears to be reconsidering variable aperture technology. The Galaxy S27 (expected in 2027) might adopt a physically variable aperture for the main camera, similar to what Apple is rumored to include in the iPhone 18 Pro series. Samsung previously offered this hardware feature on the Galaxy S9 in 2018 and Galaxy S10 in 2019 before discontinuing it. The return of variable aperture technology suggests the industry is revisiting this capability as computational photography continues to advance.
For current Galaxy S25 owners, this potential update represents a meaningful software enhancement that could extend the useful life of their devices. The ability to adjust background blur intensity on telephoto shots would particularly benefit portrait photographers who rely on the telephoto lens for its compression characteristics and subject isolation capabilities.
Pricing for the current Galaxy S25 lineup shows significant discounts compared to the upcoming S26 series, with the base S25 starting around €558 for the 128GB model, while the S26 begins at €999. This price difference makes software feature updates particularly valuable for cost-conscious consumers who want flagship-level capabilities without annual upgrades.
As Samsung evaluates this feature addition, it highlights the growing importance of software in smartphone photography. Features that once required specific hardware can now be simulated or enhanced through computational techniques, allowing manufacturers to improve camera performance through updates rather than just new hardware releases.
The decision to potentially backport this feature also reflects increasing pressure on manufacturers to provide value beyond hardware sales, as consumers become more aware of software's role in determining actual camera performance.
