Samsung's Galaxy Z Wide Fold takes aim at Apple with radical aspect ratio change

Samsung is reportedly developing a Galaxy Z Wide Fold with a 4:3 aspect ratio, dramatically wider than current Fold models, potentially to beat Apple's rumored iPhone Fold to market.

Samsung is reportedly developing a radical new foldable phone that could change the tablet-like foldable market. According to leaks, the company is working on a Galaxy Z Wide Fold with a 4:3 aspect ratio when unfolded - dramatically wider than the current Galaxy Z Fold's 1.11:1 (or 3.33:3) ratio.

This wider form factor was first shown in leaked renders last month, though it doesn't yet have an official name. We've seen it referred to as both the Galaxy Z Fold8 Wide and now the Galaxy Z Wide Fold. The device appears to be running One UI 9, Samsung's upcoming skin on top of Android 17, where these aspect ratio comparison images were discovered.

The practical implications are significant. With a 4:3 ratio, multitasking becomes more viable since two apps side-by-side won't appear cramped or "too skinny." Apps also gain more breathing room to offer proper tablet interfaces rather than simply scaling up phone UIs. However, Android's historically poor tablet app support means this advantage may be "hit or miss" in practice.

Industry analysts suggest Samsung's motivation is strategic: to preempt Apple's rumored iPhone Fold, which has long been speculated to feature a similar wider aspect ratio. By launching first, Samsung could claim the "first mover" advantage in this particular foldable design philosophy.

The wider Fold is expected to launch alongside the standard Galaxy Z Fold8 this summer, with both devices reportedly receiving battery upgrades over their predecessors. Meanwhile, the Fold7 will maintain the taller, narrower form factor that current Fold users are familiar with.

The move represents Samsung's continued experimentation with foldable form factors as the company tries to differentiate itself in an increasingly competitive market. Whether consumers prefer the traditional Fold shape or this wider alternative remains to be seen, but it's clear Samsung isn't waiting for Apple to define the future of foldable devices.
