Scotland tops UK broadband outage league table as Scottish customers suffer most disruptions

Scottish broadband customers experience the highest number of long-running outages per £100 spent, with Glasgow residents worst affected, according to new analysis by Broadband Genie.

Scottish broadband subscribers are experiencing the highest number of service outages in the UK, with customers north of the border suffering more than four times as many long-running disruptions as those in Yorkshire and the Humber, according to new research from Broadband Genie.

The internet comparison site analyzed 3,200 subscriber contracts across the UK and found that Scottish customers encounter an average of 0.67 outages lasting more than 48 hours for every £100 spent on their broadband contracts. This compares to just 0.15 outages per £100 in Yorkshire and the Humber, making Scotland the worst-affected region in the country.

Within Scotland, Glasgow residents are particularly hard hit, experiencing 0.94 outages per £100 spent - the highest rate of any city in the UK. Belfast follows with 0.57 outages, while London customers face 0.53 disruptions per £100. At the other end of the scale, Gloucester customers enjoy the most reliable service with just 0.02 outages per £100, followed by Wolverhampton and Wrexham at 0.07 each.

When it comes to service providers, Cuckoo Broadband ranks as the least reliable operator with 1.48 outages per £100 spent by customers. In stark contrast, BT - Britain's former state-owned telco monopoly - emerges as the most reliable provider with just 0.17 outages per £100. This finding may surprise many customers given BT's historical reputation for service issues.

The research also reveals that TalkTalk and Plusnet, both of which use Openreach infrastructure to deliver their services, perform better than expected with scores of 0.19 and 0.22 outages per £100 respectively. Virgin Media, despite operating its own cable network, scores 0.29 outages per £100.

Alex Tofts, Broadband Genie's resident expert, described the findings as concerning. "The number of outages customers are experiencing after spending hundreds of pounds on their broadband is unacceptable," he said. "We always recommend that consumers check independent reviews, especially in their area, as provider reliability can vary by location."

Tofts emphasized the importance of choosing providers signed up to Ofcom's automatic compensation scheme, which provides financial redress for service disruptions. Under this scheme, customers receive £9.98 ($13.41) for each day their service remains unrepaired after an initial two-day waiting period.

The research comes amid ongoing concerns about broadband reliability across the UK, with recent reports highlighting issues such as landlord restrictions preventing flat owners from accessing gigabit broadband and debates over broadband targets and definitions in Parliament.

For Scottish customers particularly affected by these outages, the findings suggest that switching providers - especially to BT or other Openreach-based services - could significantly improve reliability. However, the research also underscores the need for continued investment in Scotland's broadband infrastructure to address the persistent service quality issues faced by many customers in the region.
