Seiko unveils two limited-edition Prospex diver's watches celebrating Shoichi Ohtani with MLB-inspired design, 300m water resistance, and in-house 6R55 movement.
Seiko Watch Corporation has unveiled two limited-edition Prospex diver's watches honoring Shohei Ohtani, the two-way MLB star for the Los Angeles Dodgers. The SBDC222 and SBDC224 models draw inspiration from Seiko's 1965 Diver's Heritage line while incorporating design elements that pay tribute to Ohtani's achievements and the Dodgers' away uniform.
The watches share identical specifications, with the primary distinction being dial color - one features a silver-toned face while the other sports a deep blue dial. Both variants showcase gold accents on the bezel edge, crown, hands, and indexes, referencing the special gold MLB logo patch worn by MVP recipients and other award-winning players.
Technical specifications remain consistent across both models:
- Case: 40mm diameter, 13mm thickness
- Material: Stainless steel with DiaShield coating for enhanced scratch resistance
- Crystal: Curved sapphire with internal anti-reflective coating
- Water resistance: 300 meters (suitable for air diving)
- Movement: Seiko in-house automatic Caliber 6R55
- Power reserve: Approximately 72 hours
- Frequency: 21,600 vibrations per hour (6 beats per second)
- Jewels: 24
- Accuracy: +25 to -15 seconds per day under standard conditions
Each watch is limited to 1,700 pieces, with a retail price of ¥286,000 (approximately $1,836 including tax). The limited production run ensures exclusivity for collectors and fans of both Seiko and Ohtani.
Beyond the core specifications, the watches incorporate several personalized touches. Ohtani's jersey number "17" appears on the crown, while his signature graces the bracelet clasp. The caseback features "Shohei Ohtani Limited Edition" engraving along with the individual serial number, adding a collectible element for enthusiasts.
Buyers receive a special presentation box bearing Ohtani's signature, enhancing the unboxing experience and providing additional display value. The watches will launch exclusively in Japan on April 24, 2026, coinciding with the baseball season.
The 6R55 movement represents Seiko's commitment to in-house manufacturing, offering reliable performance with a three-day power reserve that exceeds many competitors in this price segment. The 300-meter water resistance rating positions these watches as capable dive instruments, suitable for recreational scuba diving and other water activities.
For collectors interested in acquiring these limited-edition pieces, the watches will be available through authorized Seiko retailers in Japan starting April 24, 2026. International availability has not been announced, though Seiko's global distribution network may make these watches accessible to international buyers through specialty dealers.
These limited-edition Prospex models represent Seiko's strategy of combining technical excellence with cultural relevance, creating timepieces that appeal to both watch enthusiasts and sports fans. The integration of Ohtani's branding with Seiko's proven diver's watch platform demonstrates how traditional watchmaking can intersect with contemporary sports culture.
