Sonos launches the $299 Play portable speaker with AirPlay 2 and a $189 mic-free Era 100 SL, both shipping March 31.
Sonos has announced two new speakers today: the Sonos Play, a $299 portable AirPlay 2 speaker with a built-in power bank, and the Era 100 SL, a $189 mic-free version of the Era 100. Both devices are available for pre-order now and will ship on March 31.
Sonos Play: Portable meets home audio
The Sonos Play fills a gap in Sonos's portable lineup, sitting between the premium Move 2 ($489.99) and the compact Roam 2 ($179). The Play features a built-in handle and charging base, making it equally at home on a shelf or carried to the backyard.
Key features include:
- 24-hour battery life with IP67 waterproof rating
- Built-in power bank to charge your phone
- AirPlay 2 and Spotify Connect support
- Automatic Trueplay tuning for adaptive sound
- WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity with multi-speaker grouping from Bluetooth
- Replaceable battery for extended product lifespan
The most notable feature is the ability to group multiple speakers directly from a Bluetooth connection—press and hold the Play/Pause button on up to three additional Sonos Play or Move 2 speakers to sync them together when away from home.
Era 100 SL: Mic-free simplicity
The Era 100 SL offers the same room-filling sound as the standard Era 100 but removes the microphones for a simplified experience. At $189, it's $30 cheaper than the original and targets users who prefer a more straightforward, privacy-focused speaker.
Like other Sonos speakers, the Era 100 SL can be expanded into a multi-room system over time, supporting stereo pairing and home theater integration.
Why this matters for Apple users
Both new speakers support AirPlay 2, allowing seamless streaming from iPhones, iPads, and Macs. The Play's portability and power bank feature make it particularly appealing for users who want Sonos quality both at home and on the go.
The Era 100 SL provides a more affordable entry point to the Sonos ecosystem for Apple users who want reliable multi-room audio without voice assistant features.
Availability
Both the Sonos Play and Era 100 SL are available for pre-order now and will begin shipping on Tuesday, March 31. The Play includes a charging base in the box, while the Era 100 SL maintains the same design as its predecessor minus the microphones.
For users invested in the Sonos ecosystem or looking to expand their home audio setup, these additions provide more flexibility in terms of price points, features, and use cases.
