Overview
Coaxial cable (or 'coax') was widely used in early Ethernet networks (10Base2, 10Base5) and is still commonly used for cable television and high-speed internet (DOCSIS).
Construction
- Center Conductor: Carries the signal.
- Dielectric Insulator: Maintains spacing between conductor and shield.
- Metallic Shield: Protects against EMI and acts as a return path.
- Outer Jacket: Protects the cable from physical damage.
Common Types
- RG-6: Standard for cable TV and satellite.
- RG-59: Used for older video applications and CCTV.
