Overview

Coaxial cable (or 'coax') was widely used in early Ethernet networks (10Base2, 10Base5) and is still commonly used for cable television and high-speed internet (DOCSIS).

Construction

  • Center Conductor: Carries the signal.
  • Dielectric Insulator: Maintains spacing between conductor and shield.
  • Metallic Shield: Protects against EMI and acts as a return path.
  • Outer Jacket: Protects the cable from physical damage.

Common Types

  • RG-6: Standard for cable TV and satellite.
  • RG-59: Used for older video applications and CCTV.
