Overview
Data Disposal (or data destruction) is the final stage of the data lifecycle. It is critical for protecting sensitive information and ensuring compliance with privacy regulations. Simply deleting a file or formatting a drive is often insufficient, as data can often be recovered using specialized tools.
Methods of Disposal
- Overwriting: Replacing existing data with random patterns (e.g., using tools like 'shred').
- Degaussing: Using strong magnetic fields to disrupt the data on magnetic media (HDDs, tapes).
- Physical Destruction: Shredding, crushing, or incinerating the physical storage media.
- Cryptographic Erasure: Deleting the encryption keys for encrypted data, making the data unreadable.
Importance
Prevents data breaches from discarded hardware and ensures compliance with 'right to be forgotten' mandates in regulations like GDPR.
