Overview

DVI was the first major digital successor to VGA. It was designed to carry uncompressed digital video to LCD monitors.

Types

  • DVI-D: Digital only.
  • DVI-A: Analog only (rare).
  • DVI-I: Integrated (supports both digital and analog signals via an adapter).

Legacy

While superior to VGA, DVI is bulky and does not natively support audio or the high bandwidth required for modern 4K displays. It has been largely replaced by HDMI and DisplayPort.
