Overview
Fiber optic cables provide much higher bandwidth and can carry data over much longer distances than traditional copper cables. They are immune to electromagnetic interference (EMI).
Types of Fiber
- Single-mode Fiber (SMF): Small core, used for long distances (kilometers).
- Multi-mode Fiber (MMF): Larger core, used for shorter distances (within buildings).
- Plastic Optical Fiber (POF): Lower cost, used for very short distances.
Advantages
- High Bandwidth: Capable of multi-terabit speeds.
- Low Attenuation: Signals travel further without needing repeaters.
- Security: Difficult to tap without being detected.
