Overview

Fiber optic cables provide much higher bandwidth and can carry data over much longer distances than traditional copper cables. They are immune to electromagnetic interference (EMI).

Types of Fiber

  • Single-mode Fiber (SMF): Small core, used for long distances (kilometers).
  • Multi-mode Fiber (MMF): Larger core, used for shorter distances (within buildings).
  • Plastic Optical Fiber (POF): Lower cost, used for very short distances.

Advantages

  • High Bandwidth: Capable of multi-terabit speeds.
  • Low Attenuation: Signals travel further without needing repeaters.
  • Security: Difficult to tap without being detected.
