Overview

Li-Fi (Light Fidelity) is similar to Wi-Fi but uses the visible light spectrum (via LED bulbs) instead of radio frequencies. Data is transmitted by flickering the light at extremely high speeds, too fast for the human eye to see.

Advantages

  • Massive Bandwidth: The visible light spectrum is 10,000 times larger than the radio spectrum.
  • Security: Light does not pass through walls, making it much harder to 'eavesdrop' from outside a room.
  • No Interference: Can be used in environments sensitive to radio waves (e.g., hospitals, aircraft cabins).

Challenges

  • Line of Sight: Requires a direct or reflected path between the light source and the receiver.
  • Range: Limited to the area illuminated by the light source.
