Canyon refreshes its e-mountain bike lineup with two new carbon-framed models, the Spectral:ON and Torque:ON, both featuring larger 800Wh batteries and the proven Shimano EP801 motor system.

Canyon has officially launched two new high-performance e-bikes for 2026, the Spectral:ON and the Torque:ON, expanding its electric mountain bike lineup with updated battery technology and carbon frame construction. Both models are now available in Europe through Canyon's direct-to-consumer sales channel.

What's New: Battery and Motor System

The headline upgrade across both models is the new 800 Wh battery with an aluminum housing from Darfon. This represents a significant capacity increase from previous generations, and Canyon claims the new cell technology delivers higher efficiency and more power output. The battery pairs with Shimano's EP801 motor, which produces 600 W of power and 85 Nm of torque. According to Canyon's specifications, this combination provides up to 85 km (52.8 miles) of range on a single charge and can support climbs up to 1,900 meters of elevation.

The EP801 motor itself isn't new to the market, but Canyon's integration approach focuses on maximizing the system's efficiency through the updated battery chemistry. The aluminum housing should provide better heat dissipation compared to plastic enclosures, which is critical for maintaining motor performance during sustained climbs.

Spectral:ON: The Trail-Focused Option

The Spectral:ON is positioned as Canyon's trail e-bike, designed for mixed terrain and after-work rides. It features a mullet wheel setup (29-inch front, 27.5-inch rear) for agile handling, with 155 mm of rear travel through Canyon's triple-phase suspension design and 160 mm of front travel from the fork.

This travel configuration puts the Spectral:ON in the all-mountain category, capable of handling technical descents while remaining efficient enough for longer rides. The mullet setup has become increasingly popular because it combines the rollover capability of a 29er front wheel with the maneuverability of a smaller rear wheel.

Torque:ON: Enduro and Park Riding

The Torque:ON takes a more aggressive approach with 175 mm of rear travel and 180 mm of front travel, positioning it as a high-performance e-mountain bike built for "big jumps and party laps," according to Canyon. This additional suspension travel makes it better suited for bike park laps, enduro racing, and aggressive trail riding where maximum capability on steep, technical terrain is prioritized over pedaling efficiency.

The increased travel also means the Torque:ON will be heavier and less efficient on climbs compared to the Spectral:ON, but the trade-off is significantly more capability on demanding descents.

Pricing and Model Variants

Canyon is launching with two flagship models:

  • Spectral:ON CFR: €5,999
  • Torque:ON CF 9: €4,999

Both CFR designations indicate full carbon fiber frames. Additional models will be available later this month:

  • Spectral:ON CF 7, CF 8, CF 9
  • Torque:ON CF 7, CF 8

The tier differences typically involve component spec levels (drivetrain, brakes, suspension) rather than frame material, though Canyon sometimes uses different carbon layups or aluminum rear triangles on lower tiers.

Market Context and Competition

These launches place Canyon in direct competition with major brands like Specialized, Trek, and Bosch-powered systems. The 800Wh battery capacity is becoming the new standard for premium e-MTBs, with many competitors offering similar capacities. The Shimano EP801 motor competes directly with Bosch's Performance Line CX and Specialized's Turbo Full Power System.

Canyon's direct sales model typically allows for aggressive pricing compared to brands selling through traditional bike shops, though it means customers handle assembly and maintenance coordination themselves.

Practical Considerations

For potential buyers, the choice between these models comes down to riding style and terrain. The Spectral:ON suits riders who want a capable e-bike for varied trail riding and longer adventures where efficiency matters. The Torque:ON appeals to aggressive riders prioritizing downhill performance and bike park capability.

The 800Wh battery should address range anxiety for most riders, but it also adds weight. Riders should consider their local terrain and typical ride length when evaluating whether the capacity is necessary or overkill.

Both models are available now through Canyon's official website.
