DJI's Osmo Pocket 4 introduces ActiveTrack 7.0 with 4x zoom tracking, subject registration, and 10-meter range - solving the Pocket 3's biggest tracking headaches for solo creators.

DJI has officially launched the Osmo Pocket 4, and while the 4K/240fps headlines are buzzing, the real story for solo creators might just be the new ActiveTrack 7.0. As it turns out, this isn't just an incremental software update but a fundamental shift in how the camera manages subjects compared to the ActiveTrack 6.0 system found in the Osmo Pocket 3.

ActiveTrack 7.0: 4x Zoom Tracking and "Subject Registration" Solve the Pocket 3's Drifting Issues

For starters, ActiveTrack 7.0 now supports reliable subject tracking even at 2x and up to 4x zoom. For comparison, the Pocket 3's tracking was primarily designed for wide-angle use, often losing the subject as digital zoom increased.

However, the standout feature of Pocket 4's new ActiveTrack 7.0 is called "Registered Subject Priority." Users can now pre-register up to three faces in the DJI Mimo app, and once set, the Pocket 4 can be locked to "Registered Subjects Only." This solves the biggest headache of ActiveTrack 6.0 - the tendency for the gimbal to accidentally "jump" to a passerby in crowded environments. When the Spotlight Follow mode is active, the Pocket 4 will now ignore strangers and quickly reacquire the pre-registered creator. And yes, you can register the same face three times for more accurate tracking - like if you wear glasses, for example.

ActiveTrack 7.0 still has some limits, including include a 10-meter detection range.

The Technical Limits of ActiveTrack 7.0

DJI has also pushed the physical boundaries of the tracking sensors, but they come with some limitations:

  • Detection range: Now effective up to 10 meters at 1x zoom, a notable increase over the Pocket 3's reliable tracking distance.
  • Gesture control: Functional from 0.5m to 5m (1x zoom) and up to 7 meters when zoomed to 2x.
  • Compatibility: ActiveTrack 7.0 is fully supported in Video, Photo Pro, and Hyperlapse modes; not supported in Panorama, Timelapse, and Motionlapse.

For those upgrading from the Pocket 3, the combination of internal subject registration and long-distance zoom tracking makes the Osmo Pocket 4 a significantly more "autonomous" cameraman than its predecessor. For the same price. Not too bad?
