Nintendo adds five classic Virtual Boy titles to Switch Online, continuing its promise to bring more of the 1995 console's library to modern platforms.

Nintendo has significantly expanded its Virtual Boy game library on the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack service, adding five classic titles that were originally released for the ill-fated 1995 console. This expansion continues Nintendo's commitment to bringing more of the Virtual Boy's catalog to modern systems, with two additional games still expected before the end of 2026.

The newly added games include V-Tetris, Jack Bros., Space Invaders Virtual Collection, Virtual Bowling, and Vertical Force. These titles join Mario's Tennis and Mario Clash, which were added back in March, bringing the current total of available Virtual Boy games to fourteen. The additions represent a substantial increase from the seven games that were available at the service's launch in February.

The Virtual Boy, released in 1995, was Nintendo's first attempt at virtual reality gaming, featuring a headset that displayed red stereoscopic 3D graphics. Despite its innovative approach, the console was a commercial failure and was discontinued in less than a year, with only 22 games released for it during its brief lifespan. Many games were developed but never released, making these additions particularly significant for gaming preservation.

"These additions demonstrate Nintendo's commitment to preserving its gaming history," said gaming historian Alex Chen. "The Virtual Boy represents an interesting experimental period for Nintendo, and having these games accessible on modern hardware allows both longtime fans and new players to experience this unique piece of gaming history."

The timing of these additions is particularly noteworthy, coming shortly before the anticipated release of Virtual Boy VR for the Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 systems. This new hardware is expected to offer a modern interpretation of the Virtual Boy's concept, potentially revitalizing interest in these classic titles.

For Switch Online subscribers with the Expansion Pack, these games offer a nostalgic trip back to mid-90s gaming. The Virtual Boy's distinctive monochromatic red display and unique gameplay mechanics provide an experience unlike anything else in Nintendo's catalog. Games like Jack Bros. offer multiplayer gaming that was ahead of its time, while V-Tetris represents a unique twist on the classic puzzle formula.

The remaining games expected this year include Zero Racers, a F-Zero spin-off, and D-Hopper. These titles were completed but never released for the original Virtual Boy, making their debut on modern platforms particularly significant for gaming enthusiasts and historians.

Nintendo has not specified whether all nine promised games for 2026 will be available by the end of the year, but the steady stream of additions suggests the company is committed to delivering on its promise. The Virtual Boy VR headset, when released, will likely provide an even more authentic way to experience these games, potentially using modern VR technology to address some of the original hardware's limitations.

For those interested in experiencing these games, the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscription is required. The service continues to be Nintendo's primary method for bringing its classic and experimental hardware to modern audiences, following the successful expansion of its NES and SNES libraries.
