Oppo's Find X9 Ultra is set to challenge Vivo's X300 Ultra with superior 3x telephoto performance, larger sensor, and brighter apertures across its camera system.
The matchup between the Vivo X300 Ultra as a 35 mm camera flagship with a focus on video and the best ultra-wide camera, and the Oppo Find X9 Ultra as a 10x telephoto champion, is shaping up to be one of the most interesting of the year. The Zeiss camera flagship, launching in China on March 30 and expected to arrive in Europe soon after, offers the longest zoom of any smartphone thanks to a new 400 mm telephoto extender. However, this requires an external optical attachment. Oppo, on the other hand, appears to offer integrated 10x optical zoom at what seems to be quite solid quality.
However, Oppo is also aiming to make things difficult for competitors with its 3x telephoto, as leakers have been emphasizing for weeks. Oppo executive Zhuo Shijie has now confirmed some details on Weibo about the current largest 200 MP periscope telephoto camera with a 1/1.28-inch sensor, including an aperture of f/2.2. This means Oppo offers a larger sensor than Vivo in the X300 Ultra along with a brighter optical system, albeit at an equivalent focal length of 70 mm instead of 85 mm as on Vivo.
Zhuo noted that light sensitivity will be 136 percent higher than the 3x telephoto on the Oppo Find X8 Ultra, and even at 6x zoom it can capture 23 percent more light than the dedicated 6x telephoto of the previous model. The main camera is also briefly mentioned, which is expected to use the same Sony LYT-901 200 MP sensor as in the Vivo X300 Ultra. According to Oppo, thanks to a larger aperture it should capture more light than the 1-inch sensor in the Oppo Find X8 Ultra, even though the sensor size shrinks slightly to 1/1.12 inch.
While Vivo's 35 mm main camera only offers an f/1.85 aperture, the 23 mm lens on the Oppo Find X9 Ultra is said to feature f/1.5. However, this information does not come directly from Oppo but from Digital Chat Station, who also recently shared a few additional details. Both Oppo and Digital Chat Station also mention a brighter 14 mm ultra-wide camera, although Vivo is likely to have the advantage here due to its larger sensor.

The camera specifications reveal a fascinating technical battle between these two Chinese camera giants. Oppo's approach focuses on maximizing light capture across its zoom range, while Vivo appears to be prioritizing ultra-wide capabilities and video performance.
Key specifications comparison:
Main Camera:
- Oppo Find X9 Ultra: 200 MP, 1/1.12", f/1.5
- Vivo X300 Ultra: 200 MP, 1", f/1.85
3x Telephoto:
- Oppo Find X9 Ultra: 200 MP, 1/1.28", f/2.2 (70 mm equivalent)
- Vivo X300 Ultra: 50 MP, 1/2.6", f/2.5 (85 mm equivalent)
Ultra-wide:
- Oppo Find X9 Ultra: 50 MP, f/2.0 (14 mm equivalent)
- Vivo X300 Ultra: 50 MP, f/2.0 (16 mm equivalent)
The 136 percent improvement in light sensitivity for the 3x telephoto is particularly noteworthy, as it suggests Oppo has made significant advances in sensor technology and optical design. This could translate to better low-light performance and more detail in challenging lighting conditions.
For users who frequently use zoom capabilities, the Oppo Find X9 Ultra appears to offer a compelling advantage. The combination of a larger sensor and brighter aperture in the 3x telephoto means more light reaches the sensor, resulting in better image quality, especially in dim environments.
However, Vivo's approach with the X300 Ultra shouldn't be dismissed. The larger 1-inch main sensor and focus on ultra-wide capabilities could appeal to users who prioritize landscape photography and video work. The external 400 mm telephoto extender, while requiring additional hardware, offers unprecedented zoom capabilities that integrated systems cannot match.
Both devices are expected to launch in the coming weeks, with the Vivo X300 Ultra already available in China and the Oppo Find X9 Ultra launching on March 30. European availability for both models is anticipated shortly after their Chinese debuts.
The competition between these two flagships highlights the different philosophies in smartphone camera development. Oppo is betting on superior zoom performance and light capture, while Vivo is focusing on specialized capabilities like ultra-wide photography and extreme zoom through accessories.
For photography enthusiasts, this rivalry means more choices and better technology across the board. Whether you prioritize zoom capabilities, low-light performance, or specialized features like ultra-wide photography, both devices offer compelling reasons to consider them as your next smartphone.
As these camera giants continue to push the boundaries of mobile photography, consumers benefit from increasingly sophisticated imaging systems that rival dedicated cameras in many scenarios. The Oppo Find X9 Ultra's advantages in the 3x telephoto department suggest it may have the edge for general photography, but the ultimate verdict will depend on real-world testing and individual use cases.
