When we build AI systems, we often operate with incomplete maps of the territory we're entering. The most catastrophic failures rarely come from obvious technical flaws or malicious intent—they emerge from the gaps in our understanding of how these systems will interact with the complex human and technical environments they inhabit. This is the insight behind "Slopful Things," a framework designed to surface these invisible failure modes before they manifest in production.

The name itself comes from Stephen King's "Needful Things," where a character systematically destroys a town not through overt villainy, but by selling each person something they genuinely wanted while charging a seemingly harmless prank as the secondary price. The critical failure was that no one could see the whole board except the antagonist. Each transaction looked fine in isolation. The system they created did not.
The Three Dimensions of System Failure
Slopful Things organizes potential failure modes into three tracks that capture different dimensions of system risk:
Track A: Social/Organizational This track examines how people will respond to the tool. It focuses on human factors: trust dynamics, professional identities, power structures, and organizational tensions. A tool that seems technically perfect might fail spectacularly in a low-trust environment or when it threatens someone's professional identity. This track becomes critical when the tool touches teams, customers, or public communication.
Track B: Technical/Adversarial This track maps what the system can be made to do by someone who isn't the intended user or when safety assumptions fail. It examines credentials, permissions, untrusted input surfaces, and the distinction between structural constraints (the system cannot do something) versus instructional constraints (the system is told not to do something). The latter can be overridden; the former cannot.

The Process of Mapping
The framework follows a structured five-step process:

Map the Thing: Before analyzing, establish the system's purpose, what it touches, what it assumes, and what's irreversible. The length of the irreversible list is itself a diagnostic—if it's short, the builder hasn't thought deeply enough about what they're setting in motion.
Ask Track-Specific Questions: Each track has targeted questions that reveal potential failure modes. For Track A, these include questions about trust levels, existing tensions, and whose professional identity overlaps with the tool's function. For Track B, questions focus on credentials, worst-case scenarios, and constraint types. For Track C, the questions probe the builder's actual understanding versus what they merely trust.
Build Consequence Chains: Format potential failures as action → immediate effect → second-order effect, identifying the fault line that amplifies the impact. Prioritize by likelihood, reversibility, and visibility.
Output Structured Analysis: The final output provides a clear analysis of the identified risks, irreversible actions, context, consequence chains, and concrete mitigations.
Why This Matters Now
As AI systems become more capable and more deeply integrated into critical systems, the consequences of incomplete mapping grow more severe. Large language models can now generate code, manage workflows, and make decisions with minimal human oversight. This capability creates enormous value but also enormous risk when the systems aren't properly mapped against their operational environment.
The traditional approach to AI safety has focused primarily on technical correctness—reducing hallucinations, improving factual accuracy, and preventing harmful outputs. While crucial, this addresses only part of the problem. Slopful Things complements these technical approaches by examining how systems will fail when they encounter real-world complexity, human factors, and adversarial actors.
Implementation Challenges
Adopting this framework presents several challenges:
Cognitive Load: The analysis process requires significant mental effort and may conflict with agile development methodologies that favor speed and iteration.
Incentive Misalignment: Teams may be rewarded for shipping features quickly rather than for identifying potential problems that might delay deployment.
Bias in Assessment: The framework relies on human judgment to assess likelihood and severity, which can be influenced by cognitive biases.
Scalability: For very complex systems with numerous components and interactions, the number of potential consequence chains may become unmanageable.
The Path Forward
Despite these challenges, the core insight of Slopful Things—that we must map the full territory before we build within it—represents a necessary evolution in how we approach AI system design and deployment. The framework doesn't ask us to predict the future with certainty; it asks us to identify the most consequential unknowns and prepare for them.
Organizations that adopt this approach will likely experience fewer catastrophic failures, build more resilient systems, and develop deeper collective understanding of their technological creations. The alternative is to continue operating with incomplete maps, hoping that the territories we're building in will be more forgiving than they have been in the past.
